I believe it was always a hotel. but you are right about the price. 1.5 Mechanical sounds right for this building so there could be significant external work. I cant see them stripping out all the piping. Plus I don't believe there is enough ceiling height to add heat pumps. You would loose a fare amount of space in the rooms.

Always a hotel...and it was fantastic in its glory days.

This might be more suited for the Shop Talk thread, but anyway...Matrix renovation is a cooling upgrade, with existing air systems to remain. Total gut, installing a single pipe primary distribution system with decoupled secondary distribution system for each terminal unit in the system. This will be a combination of 4-pipe and 2-pipe fan coils, each fan coil has dedicated wet rotor circulator pumps instead of control valves. New free-cooling chiller, as well as system pumps, tanks, separators and HX's...very plausible that most of that cost is mechanical

Huh, big job. Re-running all those hydronic lines will be a pain, they must be having some significant problems to be going through all that hassle

Still though I bought a 200 ton Trane unit a few months ago and it came in at $195k including install and a pretty sizeable pick to get it placed. But if they're re-piping the whole place thy would account for a lot of that cost

Ugly, and will get worse before it gets better.. Our neighbours to the south are faring far worse though.

The only saving grace in Edmonton is really that the provincial government has committed to not slashing the public service. If that had happened things would be a whole lot worse

Maybe ugly, but it looks like Kelly Ramsey and City of edmonton towers are fully accounted for, and stantec "future available" is already on the maps, though I don't know about the #s. So not as much worse in the future as it could be.

Pilot project hopes to spark creativity for lighting on heritage buildings

Creative lighting can highlight Edmonton's beautiful and unique heritage buildings, especially during the winter months. A new pilot project, driven by the City’s WinterCity Office and Heritage Unit, will match funding for creative lighting installations on heritage buildings, up to $50,000.

The pilot project will focus primarily on designated structures that are particularly significant or are located in prominent locations with maximum exposure to the public. The project has a total of $250,000 to disburse. A maximum of three large projects will be approved, requiring the full $50,000 support, with the remainder supporting smaller projects.

Applications are now available online and funding will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

There's a few consolidations coming up, I believe we'll flirt with the high teens before things turn around.. Much depends on the government and the economy.

At least I have not heard of many of what the media has been calling "ghost vacancies" that's the elephant in the room in Calgary, but shouldn't affect us to an appreciable degree

You mean the shinny stuff with the sweeping design pattern that looks perforated on the section that will have the new hotel? If so I saw that yesterday up close and it looks amazing. The only way to see it is in person as that level of detail can be shown from webcams.
