But no new symphony hall in the new master plan, yes? That was my point. For a while, that was a major project planned for midtown. The potential for a dramatic architectural icon seems to have died without much notice.

"Without much notice" - wasn't the 2008 Recession enough of a notice that they weren't going to proceed with that plan?

Quite honestly it's much better that they're being better stewards with their capital investments. While you might think of Calatrava's "dramatic architectural icon" a need in Midtown many of us would rather they just invest into their current facilities - which is indeed where they're shifting the focus.

Thankfully most cultural institutions stopped buying into the Bilbao Effect and realized there are better ways to spend money in the community than copying an overpriced icon from another "world class" city.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the master plan from June of 2009 had already abandoned Calatrava's design for the 14th Street site. It was said, at the time, that the newly announced Peachtree and 15th Street site would be much less costly because it would have utilized the center's existing backstage facilities. Still, the potential was there to add another cultural and architectural gem to the campus. So yeah, I don't think spending $300 million was necessarily the way to go, but I would have liked to have seen a new symphony hall. Maybe it'll still happen in a future expansion phase.

They've been futzing around with Memorial Arts Center for over a decade and each successive enhancement takes it further and further away from it's original stark beauty. I wonder how many people actually know why it's called the Memorial Arts Center.

Legend has it that the architect-- famed Atlanta modernist, Joe Amisano, hated the colonnade but thought it was needed to appease the aesthetically conservative (at the time) Woodruff foundation--
It was removed during the Renzo Piano renovation/ addition to the High.

Atlanta's Symphony Hall is woefully inadequate in just about every way-- A great piece of architecture would be a great thing here. Not necessarily Bilbao, but we need to show more design ambition, particularly in the city's civic and arts buildings--

I would like to see a new Symphony hall just for the fact that it would be nice to have a seating arrangement all around the stage like was in that master plan.

As a long time symphony supporter I would love to see a new hall. Fortunately the Calatrava building did not get built -much of his work is now heavily criticized and the costs would have been way out of bounds. The current hall is just adequate, but recent upgrades to the stage and acoustic structure has greatly improved the sound quality, which IMO is the only thing that counts in a symphony hall. Philharmonic Hall in Berlin is the model to follow (the orchestra as well!!). It is unfortunate that a new Hall is not incorporated in the new Woodruff planning, but there is the possibility of integrating a new Hall into the MARTA site - Montreal recently built a first class symphony Hall over their METRO and that is worth looking at. In any case, unless some very wealthy donor give several hundred million to the symphony, there will be no new Hall in the near future. Perhaps the millennials will see it.

@GeorgiaPeanuts

I'm not going to quote those photos but I truly like those buildings. Some will hate the glass I'm sure, but I think it looks great. The blue glass with the splash of red combined with the cream colored stone would make for a cool varied look.

Here is NCR Phase II

Nothing big, but is nice to see that whole property filling in with decent enough height. At least them college kids will still have their views.

I'd heard that the colonnade actually came from a misunderstanding. When they showed the model to then a very aged Mr. Woodruff, he apparently commented that it was awfully plain and wondered if it could use some columns or something. The foundation took that as a direct request from Woodruff, and passed it along to the architect as a change in design. Apparently later someone had pointed out to Mr. Woodruff that they had added his columns, but turns out he'd only been asking the question and hadn't really meant for them to completely change the design. I've heard that story a couple of times, but it may just be an urban legend.

The Atlanta Symphony Hall is now downtown and home to thousands of fish, seals and whale sharks.

I know this is awesome infill, but for a corporation like NCR I would have expected better, just like Coke that building is horrendous.
