those have everything to do with transport canada requirements for any structures taller than a given height anywhere in the country - they have nothing specifically to do with the muni, operating or not.

even without the muni, you still have air traffic including stars air ambulance and police helicopters, small aircraft movements, fly-overs, off course or emergency flights etc. taking place, sometimes in inclement weather and sometimes in non-daylight hours.

Just north of town last night Highway 37 and RR250.
Cannot believe how tough it was to get a shot of the lightning. This cloud looked like it was from a scene in Close Encounters.

^^ Those lights are not nearly as prominent in Calgary as they are in Edmonton.

Perspective is everything. Your perspective in the Calgary photo is different than the Edmonton one. near ground versus overhead.

I don't see them here in downtown Vancouver, and we have the float plane "airport" right on our doorstep.

Personally, I love the red lights... makes it feel big city. Maybe that is due to my fascination with Tokyo's beating heart from Lost in Translations.

Iirc real you were at that intersection...seem to recall that post. I was there 2 years ago. Amazing. I am ready for 3 weeks in Japan with 1 of those in Tokyo. I really liked my time in Tokyo.

If nothing else, the discussion on red lights gave me something to ponder while sitting on my balcony one evening. Couldn't make rhyme or reason as to why some buildings do and some don't. Thought it may be a height/proximity thing, but didn't see a pattern. Wondered it it was an age thing or height thing, but again no pattern.

Reminded me of how interesting a skyline can be at night.

Other than paddling against some pretty intense wind on one section of the river (quite a workout when on a SUP), it was a perfect day to paddle.

I would love to know the location that picture was taken from. I can visualize it lol. Missing Jasper East highrises...and Sun Life complex. I wonder what that shot would look like if taken 100 feet higher?
