I'd really like to see the gaps between Osborne Village and South Osborne filled in. There's a bit of a no-man's land separating the two. Redoing Confusion Corner and getting proper development on the Dollarama/Fresh Carrot island would be a massive step forward.

Unfortunately the layout of the MTS/Co-op/McDonalds Shindico abomination couldn't be any worse, but perhaps some of the other vacant lots along that stretch like the former Esso south of the Transit garage could be done a little more appropriately. The Banana Boat rebuild, as modest as it may be, is a step in the right direction IMO.

It is investment which is good. Now, about the design...

The lightboxes at Osborne and Stradbrook are finally on, multicoloured changing LEDs. Looks good, hopefully other new streetscaping elements reflect that design, like the clock tower upgrade. It'd be awesome to see all the globe lights with changing colours - new LED street lights should provide enough light on their own I'd think.

I just don't understand how a) this project is taking so long; b) the plans don't seem to be online anywhere. Would they not have to go thru council? The full Academy Road plans were posted before construction started.

Side note, South Osborne desperately needs new banners, so many of them are missing, damaged, or extremely faded. Is there even a BIZ there that could get some money to fix them up? Eva Fletcher Way/Park also looks so awful.

I found the lightboxes super underwhelming. Because of their height and how far back they're tucked from the street, they add almost nothing at the pedestrian level.

I'd guess they cost way more than the little light balls/squares in the West Broadway area, and they contribute so much less...

^Yeah, that's why it'd be nice to see all the plans. Hopefully it's not just a one off piece that has no tie-in to the rest of the design. The city should hire Moment Factory (Market Ace light displays) out of Montreal anytime there's "cool" lighting displays to design. Their work is awesome.

On another note, I know this has come up several times, but I just thought of an idea for possibly relocating the Stradbrook fire station that I don't recall hearing before. With all the talk of how barren the Transit/McDonalds/Co-Op area is on South Osborne, I wonder if there would be some space there to fit a fire station. There's also the opportunity to connect the area through the north transit lot right to the SWRT line for certain emergencies. It's not that far away and might give easier access to certain areas. Hey, maybe even by the winter club, easy to get on the RT line there too.

The reason I bring this up is a few days in a row now I've seen 10+ emergency vehicles BARRELING down the strip (today in an oncoming lane) and with the amount of cyclists and pedestrians in the area there's bound to be some serious accidents now and then. Osborne should be the most bike/ped friendly area, and it's currently one of the worst.

Now this is just an idea to start a discussion, don't hound me please. I just wonder what a relocation study would yield. Sure, the current location may save a life a year from response time, but it wouldn't shock me if it also takes 5 due to the sheer volume of ppl in the area (just a random number), and if another location would reduce total/overall risk.

Not a bad idea. Emergency vehicles use the transitway anyway and the transit garage is a void in the city. Why not bury a firehall back there along the tracks.

And to make it easier for the trucks to get out of the lot and onto Osborne, put the emergency lights up like at the ridiculous Polo Park station.

Needs sidewalk redoing too.

In my bicycling in 2014-15 seasons, the sidewalks are terrible along South Osborne.

While some new buildings have appeared in the area, some pressure from the South Osborne BIZ could help rejuvenate other storefronts.

Well the South Osborne BIZ website currently redirects to a website that's all in Japanese, and after translating it you realize it is about all the benefits of eating horse placenta. So I'd say the website reflects the BIZ reflects the reality of the area.

Why not, (EMS), It's earmarked for federal funding, expansion and upgrades..Although that would be extremely forward thinking for the City, maybe next time around..

Quote:
In addition to buying buses, the newly announced combination of federal and provincial funding will allow the city to proceed with the expansion of its transit garage, a new roof for the facility, ventilation upgrades and a back-up generator.

Nice to see the quality of Osborne Village projects improving. And if anyone is ready to pipe up and say that project doesn't look all that great, well... just compare it to the stuff that was going up 10 years ago and you'll see what I mean:

I think its a really nice design...same architect as 98 market....a shame it couldn't have some of the same flare.

41 units 57 parking stalls...quite a ratio for infill....big parking lot in the back as well as underground.

I was surprised by that. Guessing that either (1) they think parking will make or break sales, or more likely (2) they expect to get less friction from the neighbours when applying for variances if they have a higher ratio?

Or (3) They can include 1 spot per unit, 7 visitor spots and have another 10 spots they can lease out for extra income.
