Touring the 227-Unit Kenect in Chicago

Like most North American cities, Chicago's street grid has a fairly predictable circulation system, defined by its rectangular blocks and right angles. That's why the six-point junction of Grand Avenue, Halsted Street, and Milwaukee Avenue in the Fulton River district evokes intrigue. Triangular lots occupy four of the corners, presenting a unique development opportunity for Akara Partners, who are approaching completion on their Kenect project.

Heavy Machinery Spotted at Site of Future 47-Storey Tower

An undeveloped lot at the corner of E. Illinois and N. Park just north of the Chicago River is being primed for construction of a 47-storey residential tower. Jupiter Realty Company is building the 163-metre (535-foot) project at 465 North Park and it's expected to host 444 rental units, 181 parking spaces and nearly 12,000 square feet of retail.

Another parking lot bites the dust. Will be interesting to see how this fronts the Polish Triangle.

A plan to build a 12-story, 32-unit condo tower overlooking the Polish Triangle from the same developer as Logan Square's controversial "Twin Towers" will be discussed at a neighborhood group's meeting next month.

^^^ Though it would be nice to have a taller tower more fully utilizing that site, damn that's a nice design. I like how it fits the setback heights of Wrigley and Trump's lowest setback. The fenestration pattern is modern, but the window sizes quite clearly reference the grid of the Wrigley facade. And maybe I'm misinterpreting the rendering, but it looks like white glazing a la Soffitel for the spandrel glass between the windows which will be a great way of blending Wrigley's white terra cotta with Trump's modern glass facade.

And the heights not really all that bad considering it will probably encourage whoever ends up developing that heinous garage across the street someday to go tall to take advantage of clear sight lines down the river to the lake, a view that will only get ever more impressive as Wanda is built and the remaining vacant lots in LSE and Streeterville disappear.

Also apparently has the foundation in place to support a tower above, should somebody ever choose to build it.

^ Had no idea it could support more floors, but I always imagined some day a conversion of the rooftop into some lush urban forest with dense mature trees and then allowing some of the planting to hang over the edge. It would add more mystery to that structure.

I admittedly kind of like it, but it's one of those things that should never be repeated out of bad urban practice.
