Pan Pacific - or is that too much wishful thinking?

Overseas...hopefully the far west..and would not do an "american type" Hilton. If it is Chinese and HNA Group, they own Hainan Airlines (and 12 or so others) and slew of hotels (450+) - just bought a Minneapolis Hotel Chain that has a load of Radisson's and other brands. They are tied into management of some fairly large airports. Their business plan includes expansion into Canada. Having muscle like that, with its integrated air, hotel and logistics capability in our neck of the woods would be gold. One can only dream.

Seems some in this thread are a little sensitive on the topic of churches, holy moly. Nobody would notice if they all just disappeared? Come on now, hasn't this city done enough to purge its heritage buildings?

Some? This is a secular nation - a lot more than "some" represented by voices here.

I know, right? Who cares that unlike most churches, this one actually has an actual historic value to Edmonton's beginnings.

And that there is the problem with this place - Edmontonians know the price of everything but the value of nothing.

Interesting rumour. I have heard from a very reliable source that one of the existing office buildings that will experience a significant vacancy once the City relocates to their new tower may be repositioned into a new hotel.

HSBC tower turned into a hotel = perfect! Attached to mall and parkade, kitty corner from ICE District. They would just need to punt that HSBC bank branch and turn it into a restaurant. Also need a car & taxi drop-off area on either 101 St or 103 Ave.

I would think Chancery would make for a better hotel, myself.

I would love Chancery to become 300-600sqft condos.

I've heard that rumour but along with that it was also said that several building owners have approached the city for tax relief and grants, so we'll see how that goes. HSBC makes sense as it's a very inefficient building for commercial purposes

The real impact on office vacancies will be felt on Jasper ave in six months or so, so the industry is saying

Last time I heard The city was talking about attainable housing at Chancery but I understand the city isn't planning on vacating that property in the short term at least

I don't know what would come of the bank branch in the HSBC building though, I received notice earlier his month that HSBC is pulling out of the building on Jasper and 106 and all accounts at that branch are being transferred to 101st

They could easily be relocated which I suspect is what would happen if they converted that building to a hotel.

I think the idea you have of what "secular" means is a bit out of touch with what it actually means in this country.

It sure as hell doesn't mean "no resources to maintain heritage churches", that's pretty obvious. And thank goodness (or God, whichever you'd prefer) for that. You can be secular or non-religious and still believe in preserving important local landmarks like the McDougall Church, and I'd venture to guess that the vast majority of Edmontonians, Albertans and Canadians happen to agree with those of us who value heritage buildings, even if it means a little public support to keep them going. It's not a public endorsement of the United Church, it's a public endorsement of the building and its significance.

Not to get into things like constitutionally mandated separate school systems (including the Catholic system here in AB), covenant health, etc.

This isn't France, or even the US. Canada has never had a strict separation of church and state, we're far too pragmatic for that. And even in those places with a more strictly secular constitution, they often put public money into preserving religious sites with historical significance.

Any speculation on who the hotelier may be?
Any chance it could it be Delta moving from their short squat building to a highrise?

Delta Marriott already has a partnership with Katz Group for the new Ice District J.W. Marriott, and is now branding the mall hotel as Delta Hotels by Marriott Edmonton Centre Suites (which I think is owned by OMERS, but it is hard to tell).

Of course the brand name is not indicative of the owner of the individual property. Marriott International and Starwood Hotels & Resorts are further consolidating.
