I don't share your opinion about churches in general, but even so McDougall United is an historic building, something Edmonton has few left of. It is definitely worth saving and if it takes some taxpayer dollars than so be it. I have visited historic churches in a few international cities in Europe and they are breathtaking to see. We should always try to keep our history alive.

Like SHOFFEAR, I don't believe Government should be funding religion or religious organizations. Government including the City should be operating on a secular basis without exception. And yes that means I do not think Government should fund Covenant Health (Catholic Church or any other religious group) funds to provide healthcare and then have Covenant pick, choose or deny health care based on Covenant Health faith (no help with assisted dying). Same holds for McDougall...notwithstanding I have been to many concerts there and was raised United Church of Canada.

If taxpayer dollars pay to keep it standing, taxpayers should own it. I'm for preserving heritage sites, but not so cults can continue to operate.

A municipal historic resource is just that - a "municipal resource" Edmonton municipal historic resource policy has been around since 1993 and flows from provincial legislation that authorizes municipalities to designate historic resources and provide compensation to the land owner. The policy or legislation does not discriminate based on ownership. It compensates home/land owners for having their house designated and compensation is intended to defray costs incurred by the home owner to rehabilitate the structure.

Exactly. The churches' tax exempt status should disqualify them from receiving the grant money while retaining ownership of the property

Man o man it is amazing how many high-quality projects are finishing up or U/C. I love how much impact on the look and feel of our core they are having... we truly are growing up.

^ I sometimes feel like it's slowing down with the number of projects wrapping up and cranes taken down, but then remember how much is still:

In early construction stages:
JW Marriott
Stantec
Tower "B"
Symphony

Starting soon:
Encore
Emerald
MacLaren
Milner Library Redo
West Block
The Mezzo
Raymond Block

In the pipeline with a high probability of starting within a year:
CNIB
Massey-Harris-Ferguson
Augustana
Artists Quarters
Windsor Terrace

Most of these will be really high-quality projects too.

Next week I've gotta take a photo tour of the North Edge, too. So many lowrise projects there that are totally below the radar, some not bad looking either. That area is transforming faster than I realized.

We did something similar: walking from the core to east of Stadium Station behind the new towers on Jasper to 95 Street...then up and on the trail on 105 Ave and over the 97 Street and onto 105 Ave road winding all the way up to 120 Street, A long walk but a fresh perspective of all the smaller developments underway or just built that are off the radar.

What are the projects in bold? Tried to look up info but couldn't find much beyond the Augustana Church being demo'd for something (are there any official plans?).

Not sure that Milner Library Redo will require a fixed crane. Mobile may do the job? Also is anything proceeding at the Winspear?

Heard some rumors of an over seas consortium putting together a package for a downtown hotel. And not Nova.
