They have a nice airport, though. I flew via Zhengzhou on one of my recent business trips to Ordos, Inner Mongolia, and I was pretty impressed by the airport there. It's also a pretty central location so there are a lot of connections to smaller cities in China from there.

People could say the same about Detroit. But KDTW is a fantastic airport. Great for connections and spacious inside the main terminal.

Per Airlineroute.net, another interesting change for YVR, this time China Southern is tacking on Mexico City to it's Guangzhou-Vancouver flight:

It's unclear at this point whether the 3 per week MEX legs are a tack on to 3 of the existing 7 flights per week or whether this route is going 10 per week.

My guess is that the current frequency restrictions in the China-Canada bilateral mean this one will likely start as 3 of the 7 flights terminating in Mexico City, with the route going to 10PW once more frequencies are opened up between Canada and China.

Overall though, WS is cutting back on it's US flying this coming winter, nothing major, a few frequencies here and there, but on a good chunk of routes. On the upside, LAX-YVR goes up to 3 daily. From airliners.net.....

With the drop-off in Alberta travel due to the oil downturn, I'm not surprised that WestJet is being hammered, plus their rollout of 767 service to LGW has been far from smooth.

Having gone thru YVR recently I get really pissed off seeing all the Chinese boards and everything in Chinese.

Is this or is this not a bilingual country?

I know it is an extreme view, but the role of the airport is to facilities the smooth movement of passengers. Ensuring passenger know where to go and limit the number of miss-connections and confusion. It also plays an important role as one of North American's premier pacific gateways.

YVR does a fantastic job of ensuring they have the best signage possible to achieve the desired outcome.

Sounds like you have a preference to use an airport that does a poor job at creating that world class traveler experience and struggles to executive on that vision. Your in luck, Seattle is a short train ride away and SEATAC is accessible by light rail.

They've also got Japanese and Korean on them as well. But fuck the large number of non-English speaking Asian tourists passing through YVR, right?

Would seeing English on signs in an airport in China piss you off as well?

Good god! As if all we need is to make it harder for one of the largest user groups to find their way through the airport we invite them too. Such a thing can actually get you pissed off? Wow! With all the real problems in the world. Really?

YVR is under federal mandate, so official bilingualism is as it needs to be. Find something better to be upset about.

Chinese were the third largest visitors to Canada after Americans and Brits in 2015.

Vancouver is also Canada's gateway for most Asian tourists. As long as they bring lots of yuans, yens, wons, pesos or whatever to BC, I'm fine

Any experiences with Luftansa: food quality, aircraft quality/vintage. I have never used them going to Europe before, just one tiny fllight within Germany a few years back. I assume they are pretty good.

Also, Frankfurt Airport: how easy to figure out and get around in? Not having use Luftansa, I haven't gone through FRA.

I have managed to book almost everything with them - the booking was very smooth given this is a very last minute and a bit complex.

3 days Zurich/surroundings, meetings + side trip to CERN
ZRH-VIE
4 days Vienna, meetings, visiting family
VIE-TRS (Austrian Airlines)
1 day Trieste, squeezing two work days into one
TRS-PRG (Austrian Airlines)
2 days Parague, meetings
PRG-VIE
1 day Viena, meetings
VIE-MUC
1 day Munich, site visits and meetings
MUC-FRA-YVR

This was supposed to be a two destination, 3 day trip, in two weeks. But the stars started to align or fall into place, or its black magic, but we have coordinated 4 or 5 site visits, with 3 different client groups. And the travel options also aligned to make this somewhat smooth. It took my main office assistant 3 days to work it all out with her magic: a smooth relay of flights, drives, hotels, meetings and site trips and construction meetings. We also had to build in a fair bit of flexibility, and wow, did the expense start to climb then . . . airlines, car rentals, and hotels just love it when you move outside the box. They are so happy, as if I was actually shoveling gold into their sac. And boy, do they ever become deferential.

I don't ever talk about this stuff (work specifics) but it was a pretty cool feat to me, and it kind of fits with the crazy travel reports of late.

Now do I 'want' to do this? Overall, no. The work will accomplish much and make life good upon returning, we'll see if I can keep it all straight. Some of it will be pretty cool (some of the site visits), visiting my son in Vienna, getting an insiders tour of Cern. It should be good: but from hear it looks like 50 flights, 50 transfers, 50 road trips, 1,000 meetings, 50 hotels, 5 days and a couple cool things . . . all exaggerations, but from home that's what I see ahead. I am used to grouping projects together into single trips, but, for me, this is nuts.

^^ +1!!! I'm very grateful for signs in English whenever I fly through an airport in a country whose first language isn't English. And it certainly doesn't bother me to see other languages at the airport where English is the first.

All official signage in YVR is tri-lingual: English, French, and simplified Chinese.
