Watching a special MLB game on TV tonight from Fort Bragg, NC. They built a baseball stadium on the site of an abandoned golf course. The announcers said the stands - seating 12000 and full - were only temporary, but the other infrastructure was permanent and would be used by teams in the community. No idea of what it cost, though rumors are that the prep and rental of bleachers was in the $3 million range. It looks good on TV, like a spring training stadium and reminds me a bit of old Jarry Park in Montreal. More here:

We all know what happens to temporary sports infrastructure in this town.

It looked like an impressive stadium that they built at Fort Bragg.

I was a big Expos fan while they were still at Jarry Park. I never had a chance to go to Jarry Park; based on previous posts, you have been to some of the MLB parks - did you get to Jarry Park?

Yes, a couple of times. It really was not much. The atmosphere was great but that was because of the fans. I do not remember much under the stands or outside on the grounds in the way of amenities.

Jarry Park, coincidentally, has been repurposed into a large-scale tennis facility which hosts the Montreal-portion of the Rogers Cup each summer. It's a great facility and handy to the Metro.

A good example of a temporary field in Canada is Vancouver's Empire Field which hosted the Lions and Whitecaps for one season (2011) whilst BC Place was under renovation. Empire Field was a bit more than Fort Bragg's $3M pricetag though...it ended up around $14M. It was also twice as large as Fort Bragg capacity-wise.

That looks like a very useful facility. We need to figure out what we want here. Something like Empire Field would work well at reasonable cost for most things Halifax would need a stadium for. Only if we were to pursue the (IMO) foolish goal of gaining a CFL team would we need the big-ticket stadium.

How about a three phase plan on building the field and be on the field for 2017

1st year- perm modular grandstand, other grandstand is like Empire, one perm modular end zone with the other end zone temp, two locker rooms built between endzone seating and grand stand. Scoreboard built behind perm end zone. Construction of building behind perm grand stand which would have offices, suites, box seats ect. which could start at end of first season or with this grandstand. The buildings between the perm end zone and grand stand would have multi floors more like party decks.

2nd year- construct two more buildings like the ones between the end zone seating and grand stands, remove temp grand stands, build modular, grand stands. make all seating perm. Modular is the way to go.

3rd year Clearview buildings for all entrances, which would have resturants areas, additional modular restrooms, temp concession carts, ect.... finish any late construction. Cost would be less than the actual construction of a stadium. Playing all three years. " Our team grows as our stadium grows." Thoughts?

I like the concept of phasing in the stadium. Teams have shown they will play seasons in stadiums at different phases of renovation. Anaheim Angels 1997-98 and New York Rangers/Knicks 2010-12 come to mind.

Need a better/less racist name than Mic Macs though...

Sorry from the USA and sorry if anyone was offended by the name. A lot can be done and not at the going rate of stadiums. I like the concept that China had done in building hotels in just a few days. I am sure that a modular stadium can be built cheap, safe, and nice. I looked at Halifax (if I win the lotto lol) for teams. 3 teams 1 CFL, one NASL, and NWSL. I would do the soccer teams if and only if the other cities with CFL teams, with the exception of MSL cities in Canada, were to form teams. That would be 10 team league in Canada, minus the MLS teams, Toronto and Montreal. I don't think Halifax would be able to support a MLS team, but I do believe they could support a NASL. Think of the marketing for the championship being Canada vs the US. That would be 8-10 Canadian teams with 12 in the US, Franchise fee is 3.5 million, Make a deal for all Canadian teams to come in at 3 million or less and there is no salary cap. Need 7-10K a game to make a marginal profit. The Ladies have a low franchise fee of about 250k, I could be wrong, have a salary cap of 278k and need 3000 each game to break even. You can have 6 supplemented by Nation teams, but the ladies aren't paid as well as the guys. Need to supplement them working for the other 2 organizations. All three teams would have the same name or near related name, and colors. Bring in the local clubs as your academies to grow Canada's soccer program. Looking at a 30 K stadium not counting suites with 4 buildings in the corners with one with the bottom open for field maintenance 3-4 stories each. Suites on each side with the back of the each stand having a Clear View covering, like a mall area with concessions, portable bars (people don't like that bar then bring in another they would like. What you think? Again, sorry if anyone was offended. Maybe Marauders?
