Went for a bike ride on the newly opened trail along the riverfront and took this pic. The new centre will really mark the skyline of downtown Moncton once it's finished.

Regardless, CTV had a similar story on TV tonight (and this will be available on CTV.ca for free online access). There was apparently a media tour of the site today.

It was interesting to hear that they are already booking shows and events for the new venue extending from 2018-2021. A five year planning horizon seems pretty intense. I wonder what sort of events we're talking about???

I imagine these would be events that are currently run out of the Coliseum like trade shows or conferences. Five years out is a bit too far for major sporting events or concert tours.

As far as I've heard the Coliseum will continue to play host to the large scale trade shows like the truck show, radical speed sport, home show etc...it's floor space can't be matched for that type of stuff...however the new center will be used for concerts, sports, theatrical shows and smaller conventions like comicon type stuff I imagine.

Yeah remember the new events centre isn't made for things like trade shows. The only space is the ice surface, the concourse and that "flex space" that will face the outdoor plaza, which isn't huge - though I can't recall its measurements.

Will it have a retractable lower bowl like Harbour Station in Saint John? That really opens up the amount of floor space available for events.

Nope. I'm almost 100% certain the seating is fixed.

As has been mentioned in several preceding posts, the Coliseum will remain open as a trade centre, and most events requiring large amounts of floor space will go to the Coliseum instead.

I do wonder however if they will rename the Coliseum after the events centre opens up. Since the Coliseum will no longer be an arena, the name "Coliseum" will no longer be quite appropriate. I could see then renaming the facility to something like "Maritime Trade Centre" or such. Does anyone else have any ideas?

What I would like to see happen with the Coliseum is retain seating only in the east side of the building similar to the arena at UPEI. That what there is still capacity for seating for hockey on at least one side of the arena if it is needed (Memorial Cup, RBC Cup, etc) use the the rest as trade space similar to the Halifax Metro Centre but take out the permanent seating on the south, west and north sides.

I was speaking with a few workers about the Coliseum, and one of them had told me there looking at expanding the coliseum after the Downtown Events Centre is open, and the wildcats move there.

I will say by the time the Downtown Events Centre is open I think the coliseum will be in dyer need of renovation/expansion.

The city is not interested in maintaining an ice plant at the Coliseum once the events centre opens. The Coliseum's days as a hockey rink are numbered.

The city plans on maximizing the space in the building to enhance it's capabilities as a trade show venue. To this end, all seating is to be removed and the old arena portion of the Coliseum will be opened up.

Since trade shows occupy only a small number of weekends per year, the old arena portion of the complex will be used as a sports "field house" most of the time, with space for multiple courts for basketball, tennis etc, likely with removable partitions. There will likely be a walking/running track on the second level.

To see what I mean, here are some images from one of the presentations made indicating a possible future for the Coliseum:

I'm not sure if all of this post should be in this thread, but I'll leave it here and a MOD can move it if they'd like.
I hope they don't keep the grounds as they are. You could build houses off of Ayer and Worthington. The city could also build some low or middle income housing or making more parks like around the poorly named superior sanitation centre.

Actually one thing I would like to see is Whitney Ave. extended to connect to the road that comes off of Russ Howard and more fields built. Even better would be to take out the tracks, especially due to the decline of Co-op Atlantic. Perhaps help relocate the businesses who would still require the tracks to an area where they're available, like the new business park behind Sobeys on Elmwood.

Basically try to integrate Centenial Park, the Coliseum and CN Sportsplex, perhaps even connections to Bernice MacNaughton and the Centennial Park residential area. I'll try to do a potential mockup of the area when I get few minutes on my computer.

I don't know what you mean about "retractable" floor seating. There will be floor seating to be sure (to get capacity up over that magical 10,000 mark), but I imagine that the chairs will be portable, not retractable........
