I don't know if anything in this area is ever completely sure until it is done, but the Federal grant is paying for about 2/3rds of the cost, and usually that is more than enough incentive for everyone else to come through with the remainder.

Kolano Design which is the design firm working on the redevelopment of Allegheny Center is using my photos all over the interior of the redevelopment and will be on banners and on windows. They said it should open in October.

RIDC announced Hazlewood plans

Not bad - reminds me a bit of the Foundry in 9th ward. I don't mind these nods to the past, as long as they don't hold a project back.

Nice to see a few projects and regional demand announcements pop up after a pretty slow few months.

I'm excited about the cross town deck but am not impressed by the preliminary design. It will probably cost more that 20 million by the time it is finished. And yet it is basically a square or grass surrounded by busy roads. To really link downtown to the hill, it needs to carry the dense, walkable and pedestrian scale of downtown across the interstate to the hill.

As it looks in this render, what we'll end up with is a nice looking median. And it will be a median in an area of the city that is so unpleasant to be in as a pedestrian, that everyone avoids it. This is a result of the broader lanes, and highway like infrastructure that gives this area the feel of a highway on-ramp rather than a vibrant city block.

I'm not sure what the solution is though. In my mind this deck is about the only way to get the urban fabric to expand out of downtown and into the hill. But perhaps the design can be modified to better accomplish this. For instance, the outer sidewalks can be improved. A lawn and some trees aren't what makes this project valuable to pittsburgh. Instead it is the link between two neighborhoods that makes it valuable. That link absolutely must include sidewalks that are as inviting and safe as those downtown.

In summary, I hope this project is more than just a landscaped median between the two roads. And hopefully the sidewalks are more than an afterthought along a high speed road.

Agreed. I think it is a worthwhile project but I don't really get the "wow" factor if this is as ambitious as the vision gets. However, I also think that it could become more viable if/when the rest of the lower hill plan starts to materialize. Or at the very least, I could seeing it having a negative effect if it weren't done, as opposed to becoming some fantastic asset to the area because it's there.

In other minor site news, Zottola is almost finished up with Element 1 of the infrastructure project and will soon shift their laydown area in order to begin the extension of street 1 over to where the HOV off/on currently lives. Street two is actually slated to open relatively soon. From the sounds of it, it's going to be a bunch of roads to nowhere, as the residential component which was slated to land in the eastern end of the site, is not even remotely close to happening at this point. If and when that ever sees the light of day, it will begin with two parcels hugging the Wylie Ave extension.

Some of the drawings in the application, previously linked by chucka, look a lot nicer:

Generally they have to do a park-like space because they can't overload the structure, but I agree it should be smartly designed.

Interesting--so not WalMart. Ultimately I think the form of the building/complex matters more, but this is going to brand that section of East Liberty a little differently than a WalMart would have.

I had also wondered what happened to Whole Foods's plans to expand its existing store. I guess now we know.

Speaking of, has anyone seen any substantive plans/renderings of this project? It will be designed by MV+A who pretty much specialize in this type of urban grocery store mixed use and usually do an excellent job.

I'm surprised that it became a Whole Foods. I guess it's better than Walmart but still seems like a pretty low density usage & considering they have one a mile away, why is this needed?
EDIT: Nevermind, I guess the fact that it's larger than the "cramped" nearby location is one reason. I wonder if they will sell close the other location once this one is completed then?

I'm hoping it is an "urban format" store incorporated into a multi-level complex also including the planned residences and office space.

I hope so too, specifically that it has residential on top. Hey, if Giant Eagle in Shadyside could build 300-400k condos on top of itself LG Realty Advisors (Gumberg) should be able to as well.

After asking if they were closing up the old Whole Foods location at Eastside I found the headline at Pgh Business Times that says they are "moving". I'm sure that old location will have no problem finding a tenant of some type with its prime and established location.

http://www.bizjournals.com/pittsburgh/ne...market-moving-east-liberty-store-to.html

Incidentally, one of the top headline on CNN today is the financial woes of Whole Foods. (Down 22% from a year ago due in part to the price gouging scandal): http://money.cnn.com/2016/07/27/investing/whole-foods-earnings-july/index.html

Cincinnati had an ambitious plan to deck I71 along the riverfront. Forget what happened with that.. it would've included like 5-6 decks similar to the one in the lower hill, so I'm sure cost was an issue.

So, on Saturday the Macys downtown caught on fire. I was up on Mt. Washington taking photos at a wedding at St. Marys and could see tons of smoke coming from downtown. Wasn't sure what it was and just found out. Hope the damage isnt too bad. They said it was an electrical fire.

A 1 million sqft warehouse is coming to Chapman Westport, a business park near the airport:

https://buildingpittsburgh.com/2016/07/20/could-it-be-amazon/

The speculation in that article is it could be Amazon, but in fact the end-user is currently unknown, and it was not revealed at the approval meeting that happened after that article:

U.S. Steel is extending its lease, but the crappy Bizjournals paywall has literally any other info behind the wall.

In any case, them staying is better than the crap they were going to build.
