I've had the chance to see this one up close over the weekend and it's going to feel pretty good at street level. I quite like the podium so far, the smaller bits of glass on the walls set in from the edge of the wraparound balconies for whatever reason is super appealing to me.

I haven't been back in a while but I can't help but notice how much more urbane some of the shots of downtown Halifax are looking. It's more evenly built up, there are more major buildings, and there seem to be a lot more people out and about. I suspect it'll get a lot busier in the next few years as the new buildings fill up.

The spandrel on the north facade of the Maple is a little disappointing looking so far but the building overall seems like a step up from most of its dull, stumpy modern office block neighbours.

It's starting to feel a bit more like a city of distinct neighbourhoods too. Dartmouth is noticeably busier than it was a couple of years ago, and for all the skepticism some people express about demand for apartment and condo buildings in the North End, I feel as if the population has undergone a noticeable boost. So far this summer, Agricola and even Gottingen have felt far more alive with pedestrian traffic and neighbourhood buzziness than I recall ever seeing (in my admittedly limited experience). Though it's hard to say if that's due to more people or more stuff on those streets, or both.

Even the Hydrostone has moments when it feels downright city-ish, lots of people out and about. I'd expect to see that continue and to a degree move further north and west in coming years.

Yeah, I used to bemoan the lack of well-defined neighbourhoods in Halifax. North, West, and South ends are not really satisfying, distinct neighbourhoods. I think the lack of population density and consequently the death of local gathering places, both public and private, killed whatever uniqueness and local focus existed around areas like Gottingen. The North End had some nice architecture but it used to be incredibly nondescript. Maybe it'll develop more specialized neighbourhoods as it fills in. Larger, vibrant cities have specific neighbourhoods that appeal to different groups and that's part of what makes them interesting to explore.

It seems like there are some growing pains too, in that people came to expect that you can run a small mom and pop type operation anywhere in the city. Usually you find those in areas like Agricola. Their presence on prime streets like Barrington was a sign of how low demand for commercial space in the city had fallen.

I can certainly attest to the busy-ness around Agricola's hipsterville stretch. I went down there for lunch the other day, and it was very difficult to find a parking spot...

It'll cost a few bucks but there are always spots available in the NSLC lot.

I live in the middle of the busy stretch of Agricola and I got to say it rivals much of downtown for foot traffic and entertainment. I'm just glad that everything I need including work are within 10 minutes walk so the car can collect dust.

A car?!? I thought people living in that neighborhood were only allowed to drive bicycles and Vespas. I hope it is an ironic car at least.
