Not really that big a deal. Pushing the 787 back only about a week and the 332 is slightly larger anyway. As for the 4th frequency.... I found it odd that Hainan only scheduled that for one month. Not surprised it's gone.

Probably coming back to Calgary for a week in September/October for work, but I've decided not to fly Hainan because a) it's too much of a pain to fly out of Beijing - one departure from within China is enough, especially given how delayed flights in this country are and b) if I fly AC I finally get to get on a 777, as the PVG-YVR route is now a triple-7.

Every day I hate the fact that the first direct China flight to Calgary had to be PEK and not PVG.

Having flown YYC-YVR-PEK on AC, and having been onboard the Hainan 332 for around twenty minutes (on the ground, tip to tail, checked out the seats, facilities, galley, but didn't travel) I can tell you that you are 100% making the best choice. AC was clean, enjoyable, professional aircrew, good IFE choices, nice lounges. However, being on this Hainan bird concerned me and brought back memories of the Beijing-Xi'an bullet train. If you've ever taken the trains in China you'll know what I mean, but it has that 'smell', that 'heat' and 'humidity' and everything about it feels tired, dirty, un-cared-for. I would never be able to sit for 10-12 hours on the Hainan 332 without feeling sick after the first few minutes. I'm not even seeing a huge price advantage to taking Hainan. The AC flight I took was on a 772 (whalebone J class) and Hainan doesn't come close. Their J class did not have near the privacy and amenities of AC.

It strikes me as an airline that is not competing for traffic from anywhere but Chinese nationals (and this isn't a judgement - just an observation).

Rumour online that Suncor is going to shutter their fleet with the exception of the private jet for the executives. WestJet to take over their flying. Announcement could happen in September. 3 pilots and one mechanic kept on with Suncor.

Their planes must have been getting close enough to the lease renewals at 5 and 10 years to need to go to the board for authorization, and in this environment, especially if WestJet was willing to lock in a price, non-core businesses go away. Has Syncrude's fleet been integrated in? IIRC they had a Citation.

Still see Syncrude flying from time to time, but very infrequently compared to past years. It would be too bad to see Suncor closing up shop but probably makes sense for the reasons you mention. Sign of the times... Ecomaniacs taking over the world.

Makes perfect sense, Suncor needs less flight time, Westjet needs more. Voilà free enterprise works again.

YEG was a parking lot for WS frames for a few weeks in May. Planes would do McMurray relief for a day, spend the next day at YEG doing nothing, repeat...

All perfectly valid reasons, just — knowing that a bunch of people are going to lose their jobs. Potentially including someone I've known since we were both students at flight school.

This AS vs DL thing? Alberta's been the beneficiary so far... did we know this already? I probably missed it.

Quote:

The following schedule is effective from 03OCT16 to 30OCT16.

AS784 SEA1030 – 1254YYC 737 D
AS2118 SEA1505 – 1746YYC DH4 x6
AS2126 SEA2120 – 2358YYC DH4 D

AS2115 YYC0605 – 0700SEA DH4 D
AS785 YYC1350 – 1430SEA 737 D
AS2119 YYC1826 – 1917SEA DH4 x6

Yes, I posted this back on April 2nd

It's a nice boost in seats on AS to SEA.

Westjet on the other hand is slowly rolling out the winter schedules and Alberta is seeing some small reductions on a few transborder routes..

YYC-FLL, YYC-LAS, YYC-PSP, YEG-LAS and YEG-OGG are all seeing a reduction in frequency but only one or two flights per week per route. Nothing major. It's still early but I would have expected some cuts based on recent trends.

Yeah I remember. I wasn't sure why airlineroute is only posting it now.

As for YEG-OGG... that was only 2x weekly so 1 would be a 50% cut in seats.

Sometimes I beat him to the punch!

YEG-OGG was 3 weekly, now will be down to 2. So a 33% cut only.

Yup I remember the post about AS mainline metal coming too. Great to see them coming back, I think we discussed how years ago they were mainline on SEA and I think a LAX flight too. Definitely remember them departing first thing in the morning when I was still teaching at Calgary Flight.

Which leads me to ask where they may put the 767 that day. They'll need to do something with it.

Westjet Winter Increases

What recession??

Westjet has issued some layered press releases about the upcoming winter schedule.

YYC will see quite a few routes with frequency increases.

http://blog.westjet.com/winter-flight-sc...utes:winter-schedule-frequency-blog-link

http://westjet2.mediaroom.com/index.php?s=43&item=1152

These press releases only highlight the increases so to do a complete YOY comparison is a bit tough right now but here is a list of YYC routes seeing increases:

CUN, MZT, PVR, ZIH, YLW and YQR.

And of course the continuation of the new LGW year round with 3 weekly flights.

As I had mentioned previously PSP, FLL and LAS are seeing slight reductions. Also YYC-YEG losing about 3 flights per day.

WS will fly YQR-MCO but can't manage to maintain YEG-YUL or YEG-YOW year round? Come on boys.

YQR-MCO is only once per week anyway.

As for YOW and YUL, AC will maintain those flights year-round but YEG-YHZ remains year round on WS (5 weekly) go figure

As for your second point, this anecdote summarises exactly what is happening and again geography is a significant factor in YYC's favour.

Unlikely WS would be able to fill ZIH or YBR from YEG on its own but using YYC as a hub allows more frequency with connections throughout the region. Unlikely YYC-ZIH would be able to fill 4 flights per week on its own, but with the feed makes it very possible. This is the main reason why Westjet's upcoming winter schedule is increasing some YYC routes whilst YEG is basically getting no additional flights but actually will have fewer flights.

Your anecdote also supports probably why Westjet is reducing YYC-YEG as perhaps O&D is drying up and these flights will mainly be for connections. The type of equipment being used at certain times of day to/from YEG also supports this.
