Not excited about the Maples at all but nice to seeing getting started, we've had bark-mulch for 6 years now.

A small, simple water feature would be nice; perhaps closer to the Georgia side of the plaza. Maybe a small pool with a tall fountain, lit white at night.

Wow, what an interesting timecapsule that video is! I love how it is totally unscripted and the old man is so-so on any of the facts. It's basically a 15-minute rant, but I love how it shows the Law Courts and the area that used to be so different.

Thanks for posting!

Why is the city wasting money with this project of such poor quality? It has been an eye sore since the Olympics... such a prime location as that needs quality of materials, quality in the vision and especially quality in the execution. That square could be stupendous if it were: surrounded by restaurants, was pedestrian only, well lit at night, landscaping as seen at English ba, had a water feature AND artwork, such as a sculpture of Indian art heritage that pays tribute to the West coast and Vancouver's history. High hopes seem to always crash in our city...

Because, from the outset, it was allocated a paltry budget. I was part of a focus group in the early stages and the beginning message was "keep your expectations in check".

I'm confused. How do we know this has been poorly executed if it hasn't even started construction? It's a very minimal design so the quality of materials will be important, but I don't think we've seen exactly what materials are being used yet have we? That being said, I'm very happy with what I've seen so far. We've been clamouring for so long for an uncluttered central plaza that is able to accommodate large crowds for events/shows/protests/etc, so for me this is just what we've been asking for.

While I'd certainly love a plaza surrounded by restaurants, they would take too much space and leave little room for... the plaza. Unless you meant closing Georgia/Howe/Hornby to traffic? That doesn't seem like it would fly with many people.

It's just my opinion, but I get the feeling that people see a square with a bunch of empty space and think "that's it?" But to me, that wide open, hard-surfaced space is what we need. It's the whole point.

May I second that. I agree totally. Many people want to have their cake and eat it (restaurants around the plaza, etc). They can't. The design is elegant, simple and fine as is. IMO

Does anyone have any idea what is going on on the South Side of the Art Gallery?

I went past there this morning at there were about 6 guys with jack hammers demolishing the stairs on the Court House addition off Robson.

I hope that they are not taking the stairs away. That would be a crime. Literally. I thought that the building would be protected by heritage laws.

hmmmm, a bit disquieting. Maybe just ask one of the workers there exactly what they are doing. I'd love to know myself

Now there seems to be renovations/repairs (?) going on at the law courts building, Howe Street side.

Question Now what

— are they doing, anyway? Getting too close for comfort. Looks as if they're preparing to demolish the stairway entrance !!!

There seems to have been no plans disclosed or no talk of this stairway demolition. Terrible timing IMO, at the peak of summer. As a result I guess there's no summer robson-redux plans

Probably just ongoing waterproofing / membrane work.
I think part of UBC downtown is directly below those stairs.

It is rehabilitation of the steps which would indicate they aren't going anywhere, mentioned in the report when they closed down Robson but with no details.

There are some tables and chairs out. And it was a nice day for a performance artist (?). Still, it's the height of summer and the crowds were mostly just passing through, from what I saw.

No camping. But if you want some solitude so you can feed the pigeons then yes, great place.

The north plaza still draws some people to it. Even in it's current denuded and lifeless state a few people see it as a place to go into and sit for a while. Why couldn't they have left the trees for the summer? I think the reason they were removed in April was because it was a convenient way of making the north plaza inaccessible for the 4-20 smoke-in.

Must be something new - Province-wide.
I saw them in Penticton too a couple weeks ago.

Province installs 'no camping' signs at Okanagan courthouses
