It's a real brain burner, that mystery.
I realize the trendy thing to do here now is put down Cold - but did you really just say that? You assume someone wanting to people watch is to gawk at the ladies like creeps in pervert row? I know many people who love to people watch on a patio - and many of them are ladies. It's not to be a pervert - but whatever.

If you want to sit and face your group of friends (nothing wrong with that either) - sit on the rooftop patio, or inside.

Notwithstanding that Cavern is one of our fave places, not sure that AGLC sets the bar quite high enough then.

I get that you need to be flexible, not every establishment has the patronage or resultant cash flow to afford something really fancy. But, planters work nice.

AMEN!! Seen countless cafe's and restaurants with this configuration in France last month, and it was awesome. And if you reeaally wanted to flip the chairs around to face each other (usually bigger groups) nobody would stop you to do so.

On a side note, in Romania a big patio trend there is more couch/patio furniture/lounge/booth type of seating spots. This was also very cool and we don't have much of.

I have been away for the last month in Europe sitting at sidewalk cafes looking out...2 tops, everyone faces the same direction - Paris is the best example. Particular south and west facing patios. I love this. We talk quietly - don't need to look eyeball to eyeball and as Cold said "people watch". Next to strikes, people watching is Frances second national sport...ok and footie. 2 tops don't mean you can't talk to other people - on either side of you and your other.

Couldn't agree more. I remember seeing the same in Paris and thinking 'that's different' but once we sat down for a few minutes we loved it. very relaxing and so much to see when you actually look.

I agree and quite like the sketch of what is proposed. Glass to the park will look fantastic and provide a sense of security and be a deterrent to litering and crime. Let there be light!

Loved the out facing patios in Europe as well. Found a couple in NY a while back.

And about the Dub project on Jasper. can they at least finish one project before they start another.

Id have to agree with the 104 st residents. This is to big for this area. This would turn into a — show during and after bar hours if this was to be allowed.

A couple hundred seat capacity I could see from my experience in the industry.

Paula Simons: Big box bars a big, bad fit for Edmonton's historic Warehouse District
http://edmontonjournal.com/business/comm...or-edmontons-historic-warehouse-district

Quote:
The first application is to open a “neighbourhood pub” with room for 596 people, on the ground floor of the new Fox 2 condo tower currently going up on 104 Street. It certainly wouldn’t be the first bar on the hipster promenade, already home to the Mercer Tavern, Kelly’s Pub, the Cavern Wine Bar and several licensed restaurants. But it would be by far the biggest bar on the cosy street — and hardly a “pub” in any traditional sense.

Yet that proposal pales in comparison to the “major amusement establishment” planned for the old Mother’s Music site on 109 Street and 102 Avenue with capacity for 1,400 — right across the street from Railtown’s condos and seniors homes.
Quote:
“It’s a question of scale and scope,” says community league president Chris Buyze. “104 Street in particular is primarily a residential street. This will upset the balance to the street.”
Quote:
Now, the downtown of a city of one million people is not supposed to be peaceful and quiet. We want development and business in the city core. A condo between Jasper Avenue and Ice District isn’t in Windermere or Summerside. A downtown is supposed to have nightlife, not a 9 p.m. curfew.

After a concert or game at Rogers Place, people are going to want to go for a drink with friends. The Warehouse District borders the MacEwan University campus and envelopes NorQuest College.

We can’t limit the area to wine bars and gastro-pubs. Sports fans and undergrads need mass-market places to party, too. And anyone who thought that building a huge sports arena across the avenue wasn’t going to change the character of the Warehouse District is woefully naive.

Still, these mega-bars are just too big. They won’t just be noisy and disruptive. Their high concentration of drinkers could create real policing issues. The 104 Street Promenade just won international Purple Flag accreditation as a safe entertainment district. The last thing we want is to make downtown feel menacing instead of vibrant. We’ve already seen how licensing too many bar seats in a small heritage area undermined the charm of Old Strathcona and made Whyte Avenue sketchy by night. We shouldn’t repeat that mistake.

Giant big-box bars of this type tend to stay closed during the day — and sometimes during most weeknights. They often only open on Friday and Saturday nights. That means big hollow spaces sit vacant much of the week, draining life from the street. That’s not vibrancy at all.

We need a better, smarter vision for our Warehouse District, a sensible compromise that doesn’t make a mockery of existing zoning and previous city planning. Bigger isn’t always better. And too much of a good thing isn’t good at all.
It's still unclear what type of bars these will be, so the weekend-only argument is rather presumptuous.

Sports bar on 104 St. So reasonably busy every day after work & likely into the night even on the weeknights when there's something going on like the Olympics or if the Oilers make the playoffs or the World Cup etc etc.

Live music venue on 109 St.

I'd like to know more about these proposals before completely writing them off.
A music venue in the old Mother's seems like a perfect fit IMO and a sports bar on one of the busier streets near the brand new arena district doesn't seem all that crazy. I don't live in the area so I guess it's easier for me to say that, but I would assume anyone buying or moving to that part of the core knows what they're getting into.
