Here's my deal. I can look at the rendering and be awed by the elegance etc. Then I can stand up, spin around, drop a different hat on and see it very differently. The rendering looks quite dull, bland, uninteresting and sleep inducing.
The current contrast has grown on me and I think over the long run will wear even better than the bland. Technically, the hotel is not a part of the airport which is also why I think this works fine. Plus
The Dirt makes the point (in effect) that the building's function is way more important anyway.

I dunno. Just bcuz Denver isn't alone doesn't mean everybody should just throw up there hands and tolerate it. There's also many, many places that don't have the problem. Why not copy them?
With respect to McDonalds and Ross, my guess is that the word from the Top on down is don't mess with people. I've read several cases where a Walmart or other retail employee was fired for trying to stop a shoplifter, for example. Companies are lawsuit and liability averse should the very worst happen.

That was a fascinating read, partly for what you observed and partly bcuz it wasn't all that long ago that it was very different.

Rhetorical questions: Where do these chaps come from? Are they local as from the Metro area or are they from somewhere else. Do they think that Denver is a groovy place to stay or are they just passing through?
If Denver makes them feel unwelcome and uncomfortable they'll move along and it won't just be one street over but to Thornton or the next city on their list. For some maybe 6th and Broadway?
By way of example, Scottsdale has plenty of artsy fartsy types, many who likely score part time jobs especially during high season. With their high dollar tourist business no way would they tolerate crackheads and panhandlers bothering people. Wouldn't happen.
Now if some of today's youth wants to see Denver and then move on as a summer project (for example) then let em have a free or cheap bed somewhere, a couple squares a day and wish them well when they leave for the next town. If they want to find a temporary job for a few months that's cool too. Whole different demographic obviously.
