Why would pickup trucks be holdouts? One of the key things trucks need is torque and electric motors can provide maximum torque at
ALL speeds, something gasoline engines just ca not do, which is why cars with gasoline (or diesel) engines need transmissions. There is good reason why trains use electric motors for traction (with diesel generators). A long train would never be able to start moving if engine was directly coupled to the wheels.
