Publix Super Markets Inc. is eyeing the Atlanta Civic Center as the site of a new intown grocery store. Houston-based Weingarten Realty Investors is in advanced talks with Publix to anchor its planned $450 million redevelopment of the aging civic center, according to sources. Weingarten has the 19-acre site at Piedmont Avenue and Ralph McGill Boulevard under contract for $30 million from the city of Atlanta.

Some details on Amli's plan for the Atlantic Station site they recently purchased.

AMLI Market Street’s conceptual design includes a 10-story midrise building with approximately 375 residential rental units, 37,000 square feet of retail space.

37,000 square feet of retail space is a lot tbh for a midrise. It'll be a nice location though...walking steps away from a movie theater, grocery store, and a lot of retail shops/restaurants.

The new retail will be co-developed by Hines, the owner of Atlantic Station. Maybe they already have some new tenants lined up for it.

Could be. The fact that the 37,000 square feet is a single space definitely makes me believe that this is for a specific tenant.

Those renderings look nice. I was not aware that Hines planned on doing any remodeling of the retail district.

According to the developer's website, construction has begun on Stockyards Atlanta.

Stockyards is a 135,000 sf adaptive re-use redevelopment of the last remaining historic buildings in the Miller Union Stockyards district of West Midtown Atlanta.

The project began construction in June 2016 with the first tenants opening in Spring 2017.

The developer planning to buy and remake Underground Atlanta has contracts to buy more than a dozen additional buildings in south downtown that have sat blighted for years. Mount Pleasant, S.C.-based developer WRS Inc. has under contract about 14 buildings along Peachtree Street that sit south of Underground. Those properties, such as the Metro Mall at 73 Peachtree St., include a collection of row-style buildings totaling about 240,000 square feet that once made up the heart of downtown Atlanta's retail district. WRS would renovate the buildings and bring in new ground-floor retailers.


WRS will serve as the master developer of the project. Plans include both market-rate and student housing, a hotel, a grocery store, an entertainment venue and other commercial space.

This would be incredible for downtown. It sounds as if other developers can come in and do a student dorm or apartment building within the larger plan. This actually seems doable with the retail perhaps being the most challenging.
