I'm very proud of the hundreds of workers that made 3 World Trade Center rise.

In 2006, the design for 3 World Trade Center was selected, designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour . In 2008, the foundation was made for the building to start and rise. Unfortunately by 2011, tenants decided not to move into 3 World Trade and then money was lost for the building, but it was still under construction. In late 2013, 3 World Trade Center had become on hold with the core at 9 floors, but the top 2 floors were hollow, and steel up to 7 floors, but they were putting glass up from October-December. Then finally in 2014, tenants selected to move into 3 World Trade Center. By June 2014, the building "stump" had materials all over the floor for the core to start rising again. By September, all of the materials were on the core, and the first pump of concrete came out after being on hold. When March 2015 came, steel had come to the site for the external structure and floors to rise again. October 2015, glass had started to go on the podium of the building. November is when the building reached its half way mark at 40 floors. Entering 2016, the core was at the 65th floor, and steel at the 37th floor. May 2016, 3 World Trade Center's core had passed 4 World Trade Center (977 feet). Also in May, the tower became a supertall (984 feet-1,968 feet). On Thursday, June 23rd, 2016, 3 World Trade Center workers are signing the last bucket of concrete at the topping off ceremony. The bucket will be hoisted 1,079 feet to the top of 3 World Trade Center's core. In August, retail shops under 3 World Trade Center will be opening. In November. The steel will be finished at 80 floors. In October 2017, the glass will be finished. In April 2018, 3 World Trade Center will open for business.

So NYC will officially be at Supertall #8 tomorrow? That will tie with Shenzhen and Guangzhou, behind only Dubai.

Topping Out Ceremony at 3 World Trade Center

20 JUN 2016

By Silverstein Properties | Official Press Release

World Trade Center developer Larry A. Silverstein will be joined by more than 500 union construction workers, as well as a host of public officials, business leaders and representatives from the local community, to celebrate the topping out of 3 World Trade Center.

The last bucket of concrete for the 80-story skyscraper will be signed by Larry Silverstein and other dignitaries and lifted 1,079 feet to the top of 3 WTC. The tower is being constructed utilizing an innovative core-first method in which the concrete core is completed first, followed by the perimeter steel, which will reach the top later this year. The tower glass will be completed in 2017, and 3 WTC will open for business in 2018.

I'm confused: the core is now 1,079'? So what's the parapet height then? I hear 1,168? Anyways, it's 'just' the core topping out ...

That will be rounded up, its closer to 1,080. That's the height that we had for a long time. But Siverstein's websites had it listed as 1,079. With the changes in design, it was harder to pinpoint exactly what was where. But as uou see, the closer you are to getting things built, it will become more clear.

I think parapet. Equivalent to 2 floors or so, so an additional 26 ft. Core is probably at 1,040'. Close to the 1,079 figure.

WTC Developer Larry Silverstein Celebrates Topping Out Of 3 World Trade Center
Nearly 1,000 Hard Hats Join in Topping Out Ceremony to Mark Placing of Final Concrete Bucket Atop 1,079-Foot Skyscraper

Jun 23, 2016

Silverstein Properties Chairman Larry A. Silverstein was joined by approximately 1,000 union construction workers and leading New York government, civic and business officials at a topping out ceremony marking the completion of concrete construction for the new 3 World Trade Center.

The final concrete bucket, which was adorned with the same American flag that was used at the topping out of 7 and 4 WTC, was signed by Mr. Silverstein, construction workers and the assembled dignitaries. It was then raised 1,079 feet in the air and placed at the top of the 80-story tower.

A new day. A new tower. A new symbol for America. A middle finger to those who took so much from us.

Larry is 85! Jeez. I hope WTC 2 finishes before he becomes inanimate carbon. He's running on luck now.

Excerpted comments, 3 World Trade Center Topping Out Ceremony, June 23, 2016

“This is a topping out ceremony, one of my favorites, ribbon cuttings aren’t bad—they all go together. It gives us a chance to celebrate people who deserve praise and recognition. The fact of the matter is, it is an opportunity to celebrate our workers, all of you. Such praise, nowhere else on earth is such praise more appropriate, because you may remember that on 9/11 and in the days that immediately followed, the whole world saw our dedicated men and women of the building industry rush down here without hesitation or regard for their own personal safety.

Hundreds of you stayed to help clear the site and many more of you worked with my team to build 7 World Trade Center and together we finished and opened that building 10 years ago – and it’s a huge success. Not just commercially and architecturally but also as a symbol of downtown’s rebirth. Many of you also worked at One World Trade Center and also with us at 4 World Trade Center. We opened that beautiful building in 2013 and it’s now home to dozens of dynamic, creative businesses that have re-energized downtown’s business district. It’s not your grandfather’s Wall Street anymore. It’s changed totally. Like many of you, I’ve always believed the new World Trade Center would be a success and that downtown’s best days are still ahead.

I just turned 85 and this project continues to be the passion of my life. . . After 9/11, I wanted to restore our city in the way I know best – by building a better version of New York here in lower Manhattan.”

The core looks like it's topped out (1030 ish feet) but the parapet will extend another ~50 feet above it.

Odd "topping out" ceremony.

Not that it really matters but I think the topping out ceremony should happen when the building reaches full height, i.e. to the parapet in this case.

Glad to see it'll be finished soon in any case.

Yes, it'll be finished eventually, another mileston in the rebuilding of the WTC. Also, if you go back and look at other topping out ceremonies of construction in New York, you will see that the topping out is done when the frame reaches it's highest point, (not including mechanical space which is often hidden behind a parapet).
