yes. by replacing the turf at a cost of roughly $2 million, which the project director said would be an option in the future for things like World Cups and International "A" friendlies

Not a chance, except in the case of a World Cup which by the time it happens, NMS' turf will probably be due for replacement anyway.

Schmidt said that if Canada was to host another major soccer tournament — the Canadian Soccer Association has long ago announced its intention to bid for the 2026 World Cup — the turf could be replaced.

“If the World Cup came to Canada in 2026, we could look at putting in the new turf and removing the turf with the cut-in lines.”

Edited in response to your edit. I guess if FIFA or the national governing body for soccer wants to kick in towards the cost of new turf, NMS management won't stop them.

When BC place replaced their turf I believe the cost was split 50/50 between the CSA/WWC and BC Place.

So that could definitely be an option.

I am the biggest one for saying "at FIFA there are no rules" but this wouldn't fly, and no one would want it to.

Gives the field a cleaner, more professional look thats unheard of in the rest of Canada.
It's not a cleaner look when it's full of ads, it still looks like shit. Toronto looked great without the ads. I understand the need for some teams to have ads but they should be limited, Mtl looks terrible. There is the sideline ribbon boards as well for advertising.

You can't paint green lines over the football lines because you can't match the paint with the turf, it's been done and it looks like crap . It just looks like a football field with green lines instead of white.

FIFA kick in money towards something.

Soccer Canada might want to do that, but then that's really just federal money anyway. It's ridiculous that the federal government wouldn't toss in a pittance to the stadium development to ensure some sort of flexibility. Say 25 million towards it.

It's also ridiculous that the owners of the stadium went a permanent route. Everyone I have talked to thinks it is stupid.

That's not the point, it just takes probably the finest stadium in the country out of the picture. Canada can play anywhere but it would have been nice to go to Regina. I can understand the Rider fans not caring but it also cuts out rugby as well, which I saw played on the artificial turf in BC Place.

I think the extra dates NMS might have got without the stitched lines might have been worth it or maybe the money saved from not having to paint lines is better for them. That is something I guess we won't know. I think it was a short sighted decision but that's JMO.

That's another reason why you've never seen the NT play in Calgary, the lines, plus I don't think the field is large for regulation FIFA intl soccer (not quite sure about that one) Aside from that, MacMahon would probably be great for soccer.

It doesn't cut anything out. It's not NMS' fault if soccer organizers are too anal to play on a field that has a 40 yard line.

Besides, as has been pointed out, if Canada ever hosts the WC and Regina gets to host games (both big "ifs" IMO), it won't be a huge challenge to replace the rug, which by then will probably need replacement anyway.

yes it is their fault. the rules were clearly there before they built the stadium. every stadium in the country has a field capable of removing lines. it's not "the organizers" who make the rules. its the entire world governing body

it is their fault they can't host soccer. the rules on turf have been there since 2001. bottom line. if they don't care thats fine. they just dont host. and if sask ppl are fine with that then all the power to them. but to say its "soccer organizers" fault NMS won't be able to host major soccer matches is not true.

No one really seems that bent out of shape about it... besides, it has zero impact on a WC bid. Someone probably ran the numbers and realized that the benefit of having the field done that way outweighed the possible profit from a Canada vs. Mexico friendly or whatever.

thats a fair opinion.

IMO the cost to paint lines isn't substantial as the community park behind my house paints lines weekly for 8 year olds to play.

This study in conjunction with penn state said the cost to paint a football field is $180. IMO $180 per application is not a substantial cost. if applied once a week for 30 weeks you're looking at $5500 for the entire playing season.... perhaps this was an oversight and nobody did actually "run the numbers"

http://usafootball.com/health-safety/field-paint-pro

but Sask went a different route than every new stadium in Canada. $5500 a year must have been too much of a cost burden. of course there would be labour involved too. but im assuming like Hamilton the stadium would have full time facility staff being paid regardless.

Well it will be kind of a big deal because it's going to take some planning and it's gonna cost some dough. First, depending on when we get the WC, if it's sooner, it will have to be played on turf not artificial turf. What happened with the women won't likely happen to the men over the next 20 years (I sit to be corrected on that one.)

So every WC stadium in Canada will have to time it so they will replace their artificial fields with natural turf. Artificial turf life is seldom beyond eight years and usually around five before replacement. So you really don't want a situation where you rip it up after two years to replace with natural turf.

Second because of maintenance costs the natural turf will have to be ripped up again and be replaced with artificial turf and so it is likely the natural turf will be kept for at least a year or two before being replaced with an artificial surface. This is gonna cost some dough.

Furthermore, upon further digging it appears cost was not an issue in deciding the type of turf. Nor did I think it was. Not sure where the 2 days downtime comes from though. THF can change from football to soccer mode in less than a day.

Painted lines require field downtime — up to two days — and come with material and labour costs, although money wasn’t a “driving force” behind the decision, said Schmidt.

New Regina stadium turf might deter major soccer matches

http://leaderpost.com/sports/local-sports/new-regina-stadium-turf-might-deter-major-soccer-matches

“It’s a little bit of a trade-off: Are you accommodating those once-in-a-while events versus the everyday use that we’re getting out that type of facility right now,” he said.

If the city were to get the opportunity to host an international soccer game, it would discuss with the sport’s governing bodies what is required for the field, said Schmidt. That might involve replacing the turf, at a cost of about $1.5 million.

Masch called that a “short-sighted view.”

“We do have the opportunity to address this now,” he said.

Masch had hoped one of the stadium’s test events before it opens to the Roughriders for the 2017 season would involve soccer; Schmidt said that won’t be case.

In November, then-stadium lead Brent Sjoberg had mentioned soccer as potential “second major tenant” for the facility.

Schmidt said while that idea has been discussed, “At the present time there are no real conversations going on that way.”
