I totally get your point but in that WC single month, more games (around 64) featuring capacity crowds would be played in Canada than would be played in 7-8 years at a new NFL mega-stadium in Toronto.

Only Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver would ever be considered for the final. The WC only wants finals in world class cities that would attract tourists. Edmonton is not one of those. It's a business, and more money would be made in those 3 cities.

Wrong answer kid. The governing mafioso body of the WC doesn't care about "tourists" supporting the final city's local economy....bums in seats is all they care about. Btw why is there even a discussion about this? Darfur has a better shot hosting then we do...

Solid contribution to this thread.

I dont see where the original poster said anything about fifa caring about supporting the local economy.

I live in Edmonton. Great city. but I do agree I don't see commonwealth ever seeing such a prestigious stage aka the most televised event period. But I don't understand why anyone would write off a Canadian bid. At first glance... I get it we aren't going to line the pockets of anyone. We aren't going to build 7 billion dollars worth of stadiums.

On the other hand Canada would be the cleanest world cup bid in the history of ever. safe on so many levels. No corruption, No slave labor. Does fifa care about this bad press? They are definitely gonna be under a microscope on the bidding proccess from now on. That definitely helps our case

The smallest city to host the World Cup final in recent memory is Berlin. Not a chance it would be in Edmonton. Toronto and Montreal are the only realistic possibilities. An option for Toronto would be to go the Olympic route - a relatively small stadium that's expandable to whatever size is needed. There's no need for a white elephant or the NFL.

Mississauga has been vocal in the past about a stadium...A 25,000 seat stadium for the argos but either way an appetite for a stadium clearly exists. 30,000 seats with 2 monster temp seating sections to bring it to 70,000.

The only question becomes it's legacy. additional CFL team? I don't see the Argos moving out of BMO.

They could just add temp seats and temp roof panel to BMO Field, it could easily be expanded to 60,000 with the adjustable roof and lots of space around the sides. MLSE could always keep the temp seats and roof panel once they downsize again after the game so they can expand it incrementally in the future at no cost. Win-win. Have the final in Montreal and the semi-finals in Toronto and Vancouver.

How come BMO was half full for last nights game vs Vancouver?

It wasn't half full if you actually watched the whole game. Around 22k for a non-league ACC game was actually a near record. They're not advertised like other games nor as popular for now. Added capacity for future expansion would be primarily for the 20+ league games where average attendance has been going up by 3,000 or so each year.

You do know TFC is in multiple competitions the Canadian Championship is one of those competitions and has lower fan interest than league games.
22K for the Canadian Championship on a Tuesday night is probably a record attendance for that competition.
TFC has an average league attendance of over 28K.

To say bmo field could be "easily" expanded to 60,000 is flat out nonsense. They had a difficult time expanding to 30k. The footprint isnt there. Where the heck r they going to fit 30,000 more seats. winter classic capacity wont even be 40,000 seats. And you make it seem like an adjustable roof can be slapped together like nothing at low cost. What is this lego? What the heck is an adjustable roof. Mlse just spent $120 million on a permanent roof. Why would they tear it down. And you cant just "store" a roof panel and additional seats. These ideas have no common sense.

If your idea of "easily" is $300 million and two years construction then ya sure. Easy peazy

Just for reference. Seating capacity of current stand at bmo are as follows

South end 3000
West end 10,000
East stand 15,000

Total= 28,000 add your suites, standing room patios and field level seating and you get the 30,000 capacity.

Hypothetically you could tear down the west stand and make it mimic the east stand. Thats 30,000 seats. You can add a second deck to the south end thats 6000 total south end seats. You can mimic the north end like the south end. Thats 6000 more seats.

Completely built out you would have as follows

South 6000
North 6000
East 15,000
West 15,000

Total 42,000. Standing room, suites and field level make capacity 45,000.

Thats with completely tearing down the west stand. Doubling the south stand and building two brand new levels in the north end.

All that would come at a massive cost. And still only 45,000 seats. Not sure how you claim it can be "easily" built up to 60,000 with some alien like floating revolving hovering imaginery roof. As well as temporary seats the magically become permanant as expansion becomes permanent "at no cost"

Off the grid games that are not part of the season ticket package are always a tougher sell in North America.

People here haven't gotten into the culture like elsewhere in the world where the fans still pack stadiums for friendlies and games for different competitions.

$200-300 million sounds about right but i think they can put it together in a year, two would be a maximum. As far as adjustable roof, look into Anfield stadiums construction techniques (the model and techniques BMO Field is following), it's designed to be easily expanded in increments over many years. I made a detailed post about this a while back.

Phase 1 (44k seats):

Phase 2 (49k seats):

Phase 3 (59k seats):

Ya my point exactly. $200-300 million is anything but "easily"

also anfield never had a temporary roof or temprary seats. They built the new roof and stand over the old roof and stand and tore down the old stand and roof after the season.

Also again go back to my seating breakdown. There isnt room for 60,000 seats.

You know, that surprises me. I'd figure more people would be interested in their team being named BEST IN CANADA (Canadian Championship), or named something else from another competition. Is the CONCACAF Champions League the same for lack of support?
