I believe this is up in the hills. Suppose it'll be on stilts or half the building will be above Broadway and half below. I have a friend who used to live in the Broadway Heights Apartments and I recall seeing a for sale sign across the road from that complex last summer.

The congregation started having services in hillsdale, since that is where everyone from the religious Jewish community lives now and driving on Saturday is not allowed for orthodox jews. So I am not surprised, but I thought they were planning to hold out to sell the land to Portland for the connection up to OHSU from the southwest corridor transit plan.

A Synagogue on Barbur Boulevard May Soon be Turned into an Apartment Complex
An architect has plans to demolish the historic building.



A historic synagogue on Barbur Boulevard, about one mile from downtown, may soon be demolished and turned into an apartment complex.

Built in 1965, the Sephardic synagogue serves the Congregation Ahavath Achim. It is also a long-standing landmark that anyone who has ever driven on Barbur Boulevard knows well. The synagogue's central location also made it the recipient of offensive graffiti last year.

Earlier this month, a developer began the application process to construct two buildings that will comprise a 30-unit apartment complex on the site of the synagogue. Beaverton architecture firm Stewart Gordon Straus put in an early assistance intake application, which comes prior to submitting a building permit, on July 17, the Portland Chronicle reported today.

It's a stretch to call that building a historic treasure. This is another case of Willamette Week being Willamette Week.

It's not a stretch at all. In the City's 1984 Historic Resources Inventory the building was identified as potentially eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. That's pretty remarkable in and of itself, given that the building was only 19 years old at the time, and is probably partly because it was designed by a very important Oregon architect. Now that the building is now 51 years old, it would undoubtedly be accepted by the Parks Service for inclusion on the Register.
