I went to Israel a few months ago... and boy, while the Israelis are friendly, they're extremely in-your-face friendly. People were constantly trying to talk to me and eat with me, etc. Two people even randomly invited me into their home for dinner with barely any smalltalk beforehand. It made me fairly uncomfortable and I gained a newfound appreciation for the reservedness of Canadians.

Apparently the design teams have already been selected for Phase 2 of the competition process (according to the Lord Stanley's Gift website):

EIGHT FINALISTS ANNOUNCED

OTTAWA – Lord Stanley’s Gift Memorial Monument Inc. (LSMMI), a non-profit charitable organization, in partnership with the Department of Canadian Heritage, Ottawa Senators, National Hockey League, and the City of Ottawa are pleased to announce the eight Finalists in the national design competition for a monument to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Stanley Cup. The Finalists, listed below in alphabetic order were selected from the forty entries reviewed by a jury of eminent Canadians, highly respected in the fields of public art, culture, history, and hockey.

Adrian Burns, Jury Chair, observed that “The Jury was overwhelmed with the extraordinary qualifications and achievements of the design teams. As you can imagine, evaluating so much talent and experience made our task exceedingly difficult.”

George Hunter, LSMMI Chair and Vice President added that “Our Board of Directors is pleased with the Jury’s recommendation. We are thrilled that so many Canadian design teams were inspired to enter this national competition.”

Design Team Finalists:

Coupland/Leinster/Mills Vancouver BC / Toronto, ON

Covit/Nguyen/Norr Montreal, QC

Intégral Jean Beaudoin + Novalux Montreal, QC

Javidi/Errazuriz/Assadi Toronto, ON / New York, USA

Myros Trutiak / Pellettier / vanderGaast Toronto, ON

North Design Office / Blackwell / Mulvi&Banani Toronto, ON

SPMB/1 x 1 Architecture Winnipeg, MB

Studio West / Exp. Cochrane / Calgary, AB

The eight Design Teams, composed of artists, architects, landscape architects and specialists will now be invited to submit design proposals in Phase 2 of the competition.

The winning design will be announced by the Board of LSMMI in October 2016 on the advice of the Jury.

The monument will be donated to the City of Ottawa and unveiled in December 2017 in downtown Ottawa at the corner of Elgin and Sparks Streets, just steps from the site where Lord Stanley of Preston (the 6th Governor General of Canada) gifted the Stanley Cup on March 18, 1892.

The unveiling will be part of the 2017 celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary, the 125th anniversary of Lord Stanley’s original gift, the 100th anniversary of the National Hockey League and the 25th anniversary of the Senators.

The monument is expected to become a prominent new landmark in Canada’s capital.
Some members of the Design Teams were in Ottawa today to check out the site (Source: Twitter):

Here's some additional information on a few of the design teams:

Am I the only one who finds the idea of a Stanley Cup monument kinda weird?

If it's an actual representation of the Cup, it seems even weirder to me.

Only in Canada would we build a monument to something that was initially ours, but hasn't had anything to do with Canada in 23 years and likely won't in the future either...

It kind of reminds of those places in Austria that have squares or streets named Südtyrolerplatz, for the Southern Tyrol that is now part of Italy but that many claim as being legitimately Austrian.

Or like having a monument to Nagorno-Karabakh in both Baku and Yerevan since both countries claim the territory!

It's not a monument to the Stanley Cup, it's a monument honouring Lord Stanley's gifting of the cup. I don't think it's weird at all, it marks a historic occasion and location — he presented the cup at a dinner in the Russell Hotel which once stood on that corner. I think it's probably one of the more appropriate commemorations in Ottawa, and I'm not even a hockey fan.

Sounds like something for which a plaque would be more appropriate.

With the status of the Stanley Cup, it can do more than a plaque, though. In this day and age if it becomes a photo op for visiting hockey fans it will probably get tweeted and instagrammed all over the world. Maybe it will get more people on Sparks street as a result?

They could rename that section of Sparks St. "Avro Arrow Place"? Or maybe "SCTV Place"?

"Chester A. Arthur Place" would work too!

Just being silly...

If there was room for a Place, I'd want it named after McGee, but the pub and 90 Sparks probably have that sufficiently covered.

Canada could use a little irredentism. Let's invade Alaska, Greenland, and St-Pierre!

Here in Kitchener, we have a monument to a monument so I guess a monument to a trophy isn't completely strange.

Or...

Let's not and say we did!

And name squares and plaques for them as if they were ours!
