I believe that $740 million will be invested in the Vancouver region, $900 million is the total province wide. Hence the differing numbers.

Innovia is a possibility, a 3-car Innovia set with the rotary motor option at Canada Line width would be 50m. Perhaps Bombardier could produce those for a cost comparable to 2x20m Movias, but it ultimately depends on what they bid

I'd expect more of #2 than #1 (more Compass Card readers, perhaps?). AFAIK, there aren't any visible knock-down panels - the only way to expand the underground stations is via hydraulic splitter, and that isn't really necessary with the upcoming 2-minute headways.

....... would all of this mean long litigation? If not, will it diminish the vibrancy (and some big name music) to the city, causing it to lose out in that domain?
Is a storm on the way?

disappointed only 28 new Mark III cars. We really need 52 to ring us back to what we should have had in 2010.

25 6-car Mark I's
48 4-car Mark II's
14 4-car Mark III trains
87 total trains.

All the underground Canada Line station boxes were built to a full 50m platform (even if the finished part is only 40 m).

That would be interesting.

Are there currently 20 Canada Line trainsets?

If so, 22 new cars (11 new trainsets) / 20 existing trainsets = 55% expansion (as mentioned in the press release).

C-cars are smaller, so wouldn't necessarily translate to a 55% increase as cleanly.

What headways will these new trainsets allow?

It's the automated train control (ATC) system (Thales) that determines headways, not the trainsets.
The ATC system should have the same capability as the Expo Line system (i.e. 90s).

Headway will ultimately depend on the train schedule they implement.

Feds announce funding for transit plan
Millions on the table for more SkyTrain cars, station upgrades

Jennifer Moreau | Burnaby Now
June 16, 2016 02:25 PM

In all, there is $740 million on the table from the federal and provincial governments and TransLink to kickstart the mayors’ transit plan. The money will be spent on several items, some of which will benefit Burnaby residents. For instance, 28 new rail cars will be added to the Expo and Millennium lines, meaning more frequent service and less crowding on SkyTrain platforms.

The Edmonds operations centre, where the announcement took place, will benefit from $9 million in upgrades to make room for the expanding SkyTrain fleet.

Eighty-six million dollars will be spent on station upgrades for the Expo Line and the Canada Line, which will help accommodate the new SkyTrain cars while improving accessibility and the flow of people. The plan also includes a new SeaBus, so people can cross the water every 10 minutes during rush hour.

...

A gondola to SFU, however, is not in the cards.

The gondola didn’t make it in the mayors’ 10-year vision,” said Robertson. “That, along with an extension right to UBC or to the PoCo SkyTrain are possible next projects. But our focus is on getting the 10-year plan fully funded and getting this set of investments built, then looking at these next investments. It would be great to have a stronger connection between SFU and UBC, by rapid transit alone. That’s a bridge ahead of us.”

Gondola plan revived by SFU prez

Jeremy Deutsch | Burnaby Now

...
Now the head of Simon Fraser University wants to revisit the idea and make a new case for a gondola to the school.
...

The SFU president said in the coming months, the university will be talking about its transportation vision and the case for the gondola with all three levels of government.

It could be a tough sell based on the history of the project.

In 2012, a report made the business case estimated that the capital cost for the gondola project would be $120 million, with annual operating costs of $3 to $3.5 million – in 2011 dollars.

However, at the time, TransLink said the gondola wasn’t a priority.

There was also opposition to the project from residents of Forest Grove, while Mayor Derek Corrigan suggested the gondola was not financially feasible.

The mayors’ council’s 10-year plan noted there are currently 25,000 daily bus trips to and from Burnaby Mountain, and demand is expected to grow by 60 per cent in the next 20 years.

The plan also suggested a high-capacity connection from the mountain to the nearest SkyTrain station may be required, but the initiative requires further investigation and consultation.

“I can advise you that after careful consideration of costs and benefits relative to all the other needs across the region, the Mayors’ Council decided not to commit to a new, fixed rapid transit connection to SFU within the 10-year Vision,” read an email statement to the NOW from TransLink.

DING DING DING. This is exactly why those announcements were made, to fuel development. There are many realtors and developers who are using the whole LRT shmuck to their advantage.

We'll still see 4-car Mark I's for the foreseeable future. Not too thrilled about that.

Maybe not on the existing tracks, but there is plenty of room to build more tracks in the OMC. They just throw down the tracks onto gravel ballast and wire them up; very cheap.

6. And the train number....404 and the probability a lot of people will have fun with that number, the MS operating system on Compass Readers and its meaning. I can see the PR folks from 15 levels of government looking for a scape goat on that one.

Not withstanding the above, I believe the announcement was a positive start, with lots more work to be done. Hopefully a final deal gets done quickly as the closer it gets to the next provincial election, the greater the chance it will be delayed until after the election.

Now for practical comments. Now Christie, Trudeau and Moon Beam have taken a ride, in public, on a Mark 111, does that mean they will be finally release for regular service....

Why couldn't some of this money be used for replaceing the remaining original low-floor fleet?
