Couple South Loop Observations

Tower crane was going up yesterday for 801 S Financial (first of '16 P/H Trifecta of Mediocrity).

Also, 1001 S State is racing toward completion and opening to first tenants in a month or two. I have to say, the base facade (parking levels 2-3, or 2-4) looks atrocious - even at the NW corner of the project where the lobby/tenant entrance and the restaurant with outdoor space will be (should be the 'money corner'), it looks like (don't know what actual metal material used is) a corrugated metal for the facade for the few stories right above. I think it's awful. I can't believe they didn't spend more at least on this highly visible and more activated part of the base's facade to glass it over or something else more appealing..........I think it's really bad stuff.....

Updated page 1 with new rendering for Nobu as well as 217 Jefferson and the Andaz hotel.

Also, some of you need to kindly cut the — and stay on topic, please. Thanks in advance.

Please put Viceroy Hotel in Under Construction. The thing is already 2-3 stories off the ground and we have pictures in this thread in the last handful of pages to prove it.

1035 West Van Buren

I was unable to snap a pic since I was driving but 1035 West Van Buren's core is clearly visible from 290. Really excited for this one.

Suburban midwesterners don't like walking. They blanch when you tell them they'd have to walk a half mile or more.

False and a pretty broad brush you got there. Need is the biggest factor in this case, and when you live in a (mostly) car-centric suburb you drive most everywhere...BUT, that doesn't mean that people refuse to walk, to a grocery store, public transit, nightlife, even just for pleasure etc. Posts like yours make it difficult to qualify posts like mine, even though yours are even more difficult to qualify.

However, I will provide a personal anecdote to prove you wrong: My current office is near the O'Hare/Rosemont/Des Plaines trifuckta of automobile culture, and yet, one can clearly see many large groups, individuals, commuters, lunch crowds walking everywhere, even in a somewhat pedestrian-averse landscape AND in colder weather.

I can't wait to read the article in DNA info telling us how there were dozens of people bitching about height, traffic, etc., and the plan commission still approves it. Hopefully a member of the commission tells them to go move to Plainfield if they don't want to live in a city. Old Town is a neighborhood that deserves density to help its retail and dining scenes flourish. Additionally, Old Town needs to contribute a lot more to the tax base if we are ever going to get the city out of its fiscal hole.
That said, it is one ugly hotel design, and I can only hope a new architect is brought on to make it better looking.

^ I wonder if the Plan Commission members get some dark pleasure out of listening to all these whiny NIMBY's for who knows how long and then, at the very end, vote "APPROVE".

You can't help but wonder, since they pretty much approve everything.

Gerding Eden was given the green light to begin construction this week at 165 North Desplaines Street and they expect to wrap up construction in late 2017. GREC Architects are designing. BuzzBuzzHome has more information about this building and has acquired some new interior and exterior renderings (below). For more information about this project you can check out the BuzzBuzzHome listing at https://www.buzzbuzzhome.com/165-north-desplaines-street

So did 300 W. Huron get approved? I didn't see it on the DPD's twitter feed.

They approve anything because the entire zoning process is a rubber stamp. No one dares submit a zoning app unless they already know the alderman will support it. Submitting anything before talking to / blowing the alderman is a big no no and the quickest way to have your project iced (see what happened with the hotel next to Trump those developers tried to slip by Reilly. It was as of right and he still fucked them.)
