I can't disagree with your points. They used every mechanism at their disposal to bring an NHL team to Winnipeg, make it viable and sustainable for the long term. It is business, even though the previous government played a part in this saga. What would others have done in a similar situation, Spend the money required on a hope and a prayer?
I think private business owners can speak to this type of scenario, use every available resource at their disposal, to profit..

Just looking out the office window and I see that the old Carlton Inn site is currently being covered with geo tech fabric and a layer of crushed rock. I wonder if that is going to be a laydown area for TNS or will it be Winnipeg's newest "temporary" downtown surface parking lot?

On a related note about a week or so ago Impark took down all their signs etc at the small lot that was between the Ballet dorms and the Carlton Inn lot. If it is parking on the Carlton Inn site will both lots be run by one of the the other parking management companies in Winnipeg?

I spoke to the gate keeper while they were bringing in the crushed rock about what was happening there. I asked if Northlands figured a surface parking lot was more lucrative than a 5 star hotel... He said - No, it's a lay down site, because there isn't much room for them to work at the main site right now at the schedule pace. But he also said he was unaware of finished plans for Sutton Place.

If I were to place a bet, I'd say they will at the very least construct the podium level of tower 2 at the same time tower 1 is being worked on. But honestly, I think both towers will go up at the same time, due to space concerns, with priority on Tower 1.

A bit weird thinking about how downtown Winnipeg is running into space issues during construction. I don't think they'd shutdown graham transit corridor to make room for building tower 2 while also reducing flow on Carlton for the Sutton construction. Side thought, how did 432 Park Avenue deal with construction space? Surely this is just another day at the office for the likes of NYC.

^ Welcome to the forum! I noticed that crushed rock on the old Carlton site this morning and figured it was for exactly that purpose... the field was getting very muddy with all the rain, and they clearly need space to store some of that equipment.

Someone had said (real estate agent?) there would be 2 tower cranes going up on site. I would suspect that would be one for each tower. Could be wrong though.

I can confirm 2 tower cranes. Should be erected early to mid July.

if you look in the compound on Carlton you can see the 2 tower crane bases that were delivered a few weeks ago.

Looks like they're digging a hole on site this morning. In an area between the towers, where I would speculate a tower crane might go in.

Little hard to really tell at 11pm but it also looks like there is a hole dug on the south side where the end of church hall and back service lane are.

Anyone know if they're at final grade in the pit? From my vantage point it looks like they might have to go a little deeper yet to get 2 levels of parking in.

I think they're pretty much down at grade. They'll need to re-expose the caissons to start on the work. But I don't think the hole would get much deeper in general. Standing on street level gives a good sense of how deep the hole is. Also, the machinery on site is actually quite large.

Bottomed out, from all appearances, (image), there timetable/announcements would coincide with the actual foundation and upward movement to begin in short order.

Yeah, the site feels like it's really reached the next level over the past few days. It's an absolute beehive in there now. Only the Hydro and MTS Centre construction sites felt comparable in scale out of recent downtown projects.

^^ CentrePoint was fairly impressive. Also the Police HQ was a massive project but it was done mostly indoors and couldn't be seen from outside.

Edit: I forgot the RBC Convention Centre expansion. That was another fairly large and busy project too.

I'm trying to imagine 2 Ford F-150s stacked plus about 6 feet and I've always thought the hole needs to be deeper. It's an optical illusion.

Does an F-150 even fit in a parkade? Lol usually have super tight vertical clearance for parkades. ~6'-7' on a lot of old ones. Anyone know the clearance on the new CentrePoint parkade?

The new CentrePoint parkade is huge and has high height clearances. I love it. My vehicle requires at least 6'8" so a lot of parkades are now out of the picture.
