Argos Arrival at BMO “A Special Moment” (video)
cfl.ca June 10, 2016

The Toronto Argonauts officially open the doors to football at BMO Field on Saturday, but on Friday the media got the first look at the facility while it's fully ready for CFL action.

Touchdown! Argos tailgate kickoff scores with fans
Maryam Shah, Toronto Sun June 11, 2016

This tailgate was certainly no fail-gate.

With the Toronto Argonauts move to BMO Field comes the first of what is a tradition south of the border — the tailgate.

Ahead of the Boatmen’s first pre-season game on Saturday against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Argo fans could hangout outside the field for a tailgate party starting at 1 p.m. — three hours before kickoff.

One diehard Argos fan said it could have been earlier.

“Maybe open a little earlier, like 11 a.m., like they do in the States,” suggested Sam Sultana from Whitby.

The new tailgating tradition will be happening before every Argos game now that they’ve moved from the Rogers Centre to BMO Field.

Here’s a brief tailgate timeline on the rookie run in a 250-spot Ontario Place parking lot:

1 p.m. — The tailgate begins and it is hot — around 27 C

1:20 p.m. - Katherine Shayanpour from Ottawa and her seven friends from Hamilton and Toronto arrived at 12:45 p.m. and set up one of the first barbecues. A lifelong CFL fan, Shayanpour was decked out in black and gold to cheer on the Ti-Cats.

“Some people go to their cottage every weekend,” she said. “We do football.”

2:15 p.m. - Cars lined up briefly to enter the lot.

Sara Moore, senior vice-president for Argos business operations, said the tailgate at the Ontario Place lot will grow in subsequent games.

Another 350 parking spots at an Exhibition Place lot will be ready for tailgating for at least five games.

“We spent months working with the AGCO, with police, with fire, to be able to make this happen,” she said.

You can’t bring your own alcohol, unlike American tailgates, but organizers provided cold beer and cider for $4 onsite.

2:40 p.m. - The Argo-Notes played for cheering fans.

Erwin Wolf, 58, took the GO train in for the tailgate. Standing under a tree for shade on the hot Saturday, beer in hand, he said he simply wanted to see what it was all about.

“It actually looks pretty good,” he said.

Factoring in a tip, Wolf said “you can’t go wrong” with a $5 beer.

2:45 p.m. - Most of the lot appeared full, as cheerleaders went around and hyped up fans.

Amanda and Brent Whetstone were two of the few Hamilton fans around. The season ticket holders from Hamilton brought their three-year-old Katelyn, who sported a Tiger-Cats training camp shirt. Both were thrilled that the Argos moved to BMO field.

“No offence, SkyDome was empty and it echoed,” Amanda said, almost apologetic. “This is better entertainment, it’s better for the fans for sure.”

3:25 p.m. - Ten pairs of moms and sons from Lindsay, Ont. drove down to celebrate a tradition of their own – an annual mother-son outing.

“You know what, only two people out of our whole group knew what we were doing today,” said Chris Ferguson, 33, sporting a ‘Moms and Sons 2016’ shirt. “We just got on a party bus and we drove down.”

Mary Hennessey sheepishly admitted they couldn’t get Blue Jays tickets, so tailgating was next on the list.

“It’s cheap enough and we’re just having a fun day and that’s what it’s all about,” she said.

3:45 p.m. - The line at the hot dog stand grew shorter. Most people packed up their barbecues and prepared to walk a short five minutes to BMO field.

Well to be fair, most of what you contribute on these forums is rehashed articles about athletes and games from the 60s and 70s.

Also, why arent you calling the Argos "American wannabes" for copying the American tailgate tradition as CFL fans are quick to do for fans of any other major league in Canada?

Tail gate video
Toronto Sun June 11, 2016

Looks like the test drive tail gate was a hit. Here's a couple of quotes from Argo fans:

"Everything seemed to go fine from my perspective. The lady at the front seemed to be confused about the rules at first, but that was quickly straightened out. The lot got pretty full by the end and all people were having a good time. Jim Barker came over and talked to a few people, the ArgoNotes came over. There was a lot of police/security presence, but everyone was well behaved and the police were particularly friendly I got to say. I think this has the potential to be a pretty good thing."

"As expected, I wasn't allowed into the tailgate since I took the Go Train to the game. However, 2 of my friends who took the subway got in just by showing their game ticket."

I don't know professor, why do want to see the Argos dead?

I'm with Berklon on this, the tailgate does nothing for me but I guess in that market they think they need it to help be successful, so I'm glad it seemed to be a hit in its first incarnation.

And sorry if the occasional Canadian sports history celebration (in the appropriate thread) bores you and your citizen of the world mentality.

Brutal argument you're purpetrating. It's not strictly an American tradition.. Call it a Calgary tailgate tradition. They've been doing it for decades.

Who said i want them dead, youre assuming things, incorrectly i might add. I just would prefer them out of bmo field, somewhere like lamport stadium, downsview or york stadium.

Thankfully, what you prefer doesnt carry much weight.

I was really surprised to see that this was Toronto's first tailgate experience. Not surprised the article made it out as if it was the first time its happened in Canada!

Again. Photos are misleading and frankly I find the press to be quite stupid. That article on the Tailgating was full of mis-truths, with Sara giving the press the run-around and them not able to put 2+2 together to see she was taking them for a ride with spin.

This photos does not tell you the whole story....

The Lot... for parking.... Yeah full of cars. But the "Tail-Gate" happened in a penned off section of the lot.

You can see the fence in the photo you posted:

- Toronto Sun

So when Sara - a suit for the Argos - is saying the lot has 300 spots full she isn't lying, but she is not telling you the truth. The truth is they only had 60 "Tailgating" spots for sale for this first game as a test run. You had to purchase a "Tailgate" add-on to your parking to be able to put your car in that fenced off lot. Parking in that lot did not mean you were tailgating, those are two separate things. They only sold around 30 of the add-on packages, hence to "Tailgate" lot was half full. But when you factor in staff, 50000 police officers, and the fans that feedlot likely looked full.

My source again for this legit...Execs and higher ups... within MLSE. But people want to take may word as hate when I just giving people facts.

The interesting thing is that Ex Place (by default.. the City) was not cool with the Tailgating idea on their property. Ontario Place is getting the money for this Tailgate experiment not MLSE. Likely as Ontario Place is Provincial Owned they could get away with massaging the draconian liquor laws to make this happen.

My source near the top told me at the game last night that the main video board at New Mosaic Stadium will be approx 123' wide x 72' tall & the whole structure will be 99' tall. The video board minus the electronics comes in 8 different pieces & will weigh 452,000lbs. The videoboard is slightly larger than the main board at the new Vikings stadium which is 120' x 68'

Anyways, on a sunny summer day, it looks like a pleasant venue for having a beer and watching some football.

Here is someone's photo of today's preseason game at BMO Field:

I just had to bump this photo. With the bright blue sky and the lake in the background, it's hard to imagine a more beautiful setting for a football game on a nice summer day... this view could pass for somewhere on the Mediterranean.

Highest level in North America and rapidly growing worldwide. If i want to see the highest level of gridiron in NA id go take a drive to Buffalo. Youre comparing a game that has professional leagues in over 100 countries to one thats only professional in 2? Becoming a top 10 league worldwide in under 20 years is a pretty big accomplishment.

Of course it was silly for anyone to think that you want them dead, you just want them out of the way in a tiny suburban facility where they don't bother you with their presence, invisible and irrelevant. Just like Buster Bluth, neither seen nor heard. So the complete opposite of dead!

Is that a hipster filter at an Argos game? Looks like the move to Liberty Village is paying off!
