What is everyone using to hold their compass card? Is there a lanyard you can get or something? I really do not want to lose this thing.
My disability Compass card expires too, unlike my condition. I also pay for Compass annually (I don't know how it works with yours) and it updates itself at the beginning of the year.

Initially I had it at one end of my wallet but it quickly became a pain to get out my wallet to tap (I make a lot of short Skytrain trips, so lots of tapping). As has already been mentioned you need to keep it away from any other scannable cards. So I switched to wearing it on a lanyard. You can pick one up at most dollar stores. You'll likely need to pick up a luggage tag too (as you can't punch a hole in the card) also available at dollar stores, usually right next to the lanyards.

I just put it at the back of my wallet and I rarely need to put it out. Possible because I have "shielded" all my debit and credit cards in my wallet and the reader could not read them even they are in my wallet.

I do believe I've heard figures of around 500-600 employed by BCRTC in total, which includes *all* staff including maintenance/ops centre. REM is going to be a larger network than our E/M lines, with perhaps more complicated infrastructure, so their figure makes sense to me. Though at the end of the day comparing our arrangement with theirs can't be totally fair because the contract arrangements/staff needs could be totally different based on individual needs.

The number I'm interested in is how will REM distribute its attendants and field staff, i.e. how many will be out on the system at a single time. This is where the driverless advantage really shines.

as with me. Also my wife carries her's in an outside pocket of her purse. It works except for when her wallet moves behind it. In those cases, she shakes her purse and the card works

I have these handy things in my pants called pockets. I just take the card out of my wallet at the start of my trip and keep it in my magical pocket until my trip is over. When I need the card, I take it out of my pocket and tap it and just as quickly put it back.

For some reason I really don't like waving my wallet around. I'm worried I might drop it, or someone might grab it, or in the process of taking my wallet out of my pocket, something else in my pocket might fall out like my keys or coins, or there might be something lose in my wallet that might fall out.

At least taking my wallet out at a store I'm not in an open high traffic environment while I'm walking.

This method does work best. The card by itself works everytime when folks get on my bus... unless they haven't topped up their card lol.

Interesting post by Jarrett Walker that uses Vancouver as an "extreme example" of problems with arguing about the benefits of building transit in the city core vs. the outer areas.

Quote:
Once more with feeling: Transit is a network, which means that its parts are interdependent. You cannot think about it the way you think about libraries or fire stations, where putting one in a certain place clearly benefits the people there, because the whole network affects everyone’s ability to get everywhere. So when folks argue that the another part of the network should be weaker so that theirs can be stronger, they’re actually undermining their own transit service.

Finally, why have I said “North American” throughout this post? Because most other wealthy countries I’ve worked in or studied don’t have this issue to the same degree. Mostly this is because those countries have located regional transit planning at a level of government that has the power to see and act on a citywide vision, and account for all of its consequences. Typically, this power is integrated with the other great powers that act on that scale, such as land use planning, infrastructure, and so on, so that the implications of each action can be accounted for.
Which is one of the reasons that a TransLink council controlled by the mayors would just end up being all about each municipality trying to get all the benefits for itself or denying others from having benefits.

I have some news regarding service changes:

A few of the June schedules have been released. Here's what I have so far.

049 gets straightened, skips Champlain Heights. 026 remains mostly the same
http://infomaps.translink.ca/Public_Timetables/123/tt049.pdf
http://infomaps.translink.ca/Public_Timetables/123/tt026.pdf
-----------
410 peak service reduction to every 7.5 minutes
-----------
The 022 is being shortened. The 002 is taking over all service between Dunbar and Burrard, with every other trip starting NB at 16th. 022 service is to go from Marine Drive to Burrard station, signed as "22 Downtown".

WTF? 22 to terminate at Burrard? Does that mean it won't unload at the current burrard bay in front of the station?

Looks like it will be using similar stops at the 210/211, etc.

http://infomaps.translink.ca/Route_Diagrams/123/r022.pdf

I'm not sure how I feel about this. Why not have the #2 do Dunbar/41st to Knight/Kingsway and then the #22 do 16th/MacDonald to Knight/63. That way the busses overlap for the busiest portions and no one will have to transfer if they want to continue.

It will use Bay 4, totally useless to me as a disabled person with limited walking distance. Now I can scratch the 22 of the list of bus routes I can use.

I looked at the June sign up sheets and paddles, I can confirm all of those changes.

About the 49, I couldn't be happier the service planners are finally doing this. But as we've discussed before, the other routes in Killarney/Champlain Heights should really be reworked, especially to give some new connections to the River District south of Marine Dr. And perhaps a bus on 54th/57th between the upcoming Canada Line station and Metrotown isn't too far off, which would be a much better replacement for the portion that's just been cut off.

As someone who drives the 22 currently I can say the changes to the route are definitely a good idea. Even before bridge construction started, I can't tell you how many times I've seen people on Knight get screwed over indirectly by traffic on Burrard and to the beach. The change will mean their buses are on schedule and spaced out evenly 250% more often, believe me. And on the Burrard side, the change gives ALL of the buses serving the bridge some recovery time at Burrard Stn, which again helps keep them spaced out properly and taking their proper share of passengers. I can't tell you how many times I've pulled up to Burrard Stn Bay 1 in a 22 and been slammed, since the 2 was a few minutes off schedule and pulled in behind me. As a result the 2 picks up almost nobody for its whole run and the 22 gets even further behind which has consequences for people coming back the other way. It contradicts the purpose of the short 2 runs. This way at least the buses won't be taking each other's work.

I wouldn't be too worried about the stop locations. It's impossible to tell right now exactly where the new 22 will unload and pickup around the station, but I can't help but imagine it will at least unload in front of the entrance. I can see the point about having to walk all the way to Bay 4, as nobody knows where on earth that is anyway when they come up the escalators. It will definitely take recovery time at Bay 4 before heading back to Knight loop, but that doesn't necessarily mean it won't pick up in front of the station beforehand. Waiting for the recovery time sucks (see the 100 at Marpole Loop), but in this case the headway sheets don't show a lot of it at the station (usually 4-5 minutes)...the significant recovery time for the 22 will still be at Knight Loop.

One group I can see getting a bit inconvenienced by this will be DTESers going to St Paul's. But the transfer to the 2 from the 22 should be easy as pie, even if potentially walking to Bay 4 when coming out of the station wouldn't be. And I hope they do get started on that new hospital construction. When it's done the 22 will once again service St Paul's.

Is there any particular reason you don't use a mobility aid or scooter?

Its hard to do comparisons on my phone, but I can tell you that according to the results from the massive survey they held months back, those changes wont be happening at least in the short term.

Most opposition was in West Vancouver. Lots of people were unsure of the ability of the 250 to carry extra passengers, had the 258 had been cut. No stop changes from this June schedule.

If you havent had a chance to read them then http://www.translink.ca/en/Plans-and-Pro...etwork/Transit-Network-Consultation.aspx

In the meantime, just found out that N8 and N20 are to go to Marine Drive Station. Also, CPTDB has rumors that N16 and N6 are to be discontinued.

The chages to the 44 should be the easiest to make. all reducing the number of stops along Burrurd to 4 in each direction removing alot of the local traffic.

The improvements to the 44 should be made independent of anything they do to the 258. This was the reason the improvements got shot down.

The 258 is not only used by West Van but also from people across North Vancouver who transfer to the 258.

The 44 really needs a lot of work and its a shame they are tying it to the 258 which runs an incredibly small service of 8 trips a day only during school winter session.

Translink said a couple of months back that the Mark III Innova sets would be going into service in the summer of 2016, sometime around June. Is this still the plan?

Dont believe anything translink says about realease dates regarding new equipment.

Often, T/L has said "on the road by April" or somethibg like that.

For example, translink said our newest 21 Artic buses would be rolled out by the end of February. Most of them didnt appear on the road until April.

I would expect a release for late-August, knowing Translink.
