Vancouver park commissioners approve final design for new downtown park

Vancouver park commissioners approve final design for new downtown park

Per Georgia Straght

In the midst of massive densification, downtown Vancouver is going to get a new urban park in the central business district.

Tonight, the park board approved a final design for the 0.3-hectare site on the corner of Smithe and Richards streets.

One of its defining features will be a bright red bridge, which will serve as a viewing deck over Smithe Street.

"The park will serve as a green anchor within a 5-minute walk of multiple downtown destinations, including Granville Street, Robson Street, and the Downtown Library, Yaletown, and BC Place stadium," a park board report states. "The park is inspired by the layered history of uses previously occupying the site, including Receation Park that was sited nearby at Smithe and Homer in the early 1900's."

The park was funded out of a $10-million community-amenity contribution that Westbank Projects Corp. and Telus paid to the city. This was required as part of the Telus Garden rezoning in 2011

Well, that didn't last long. At least the plants seem to be doing okay.

The developers told the would-be owners that it's ready. The completion packages have already been sent for the lower floors, going upward.

Notices of Completion have been sent to owners starting at lower levels as stated moving up

Earliest Assigned Possession date is Jun 11th

No changes to your allotted completion dates unless owners pay additional fees to reschedule.

They are trying to do this in an orderly fashion

One planter near the lobby turned yellow and the plants were trimmed back.
I guess they should sprout up again.

The glass panels on Robson were open to walk over, but covered over with cardboard yesterday.
There seems to be a bit of a lip at the edge - i.e. slightly elevated compared to the concrete sidewalk.

One fountain head seems really close to a planter.
Who are the [morons] designing this stuff?

Looks pretty close. They should have hired you.

It looks like they would have to go through a layer of reinforced concrete, at least at the part of the lane near Robson Street.

Strange that the rebar / poured concrete don't meet the William Farrell Building.
Maybe that's where the cables are?

Looks like they're pouring concrete on top of the old Telus building on Seymour Street.

A new entrance has been created on the Richards Street side of the condo tower. Compare to this older shot from a couple of months ago.

Noticed today that a couple of awnings have been removed from the William Farrell Building.
Not sure how long it's been like that.

Pic by me today:

A little bit of excitement in the neighbourhood today. One of the construction garbage bins burned.

^ That's just the construction team's pot break. (Which may explain the amazingly shoddy construction quality these days.)

Great shots!

I noticed they were working on the Robson sidewalk again today.
... and that the fountains on Georgia were dry. The horsetails in the cut-back planter have been replaced with new plants.
