Downtown needs to free up the streets for traffic. We need better bicycle and bus lanes. Maybe it doesn't matter on Hargraeve because it funnels into only two lanes with the bike lane mysteriously vanishing at Graham but when traffic backs up for events at MTSC the single lane on parts of Hargraeve suddenly turn into 2 lanes with cars driving on the bike-path. One lane for travel and 2 for parking is not great.

I'll agree their needs to be better facilities for cycling, like you mention at Hargrave. Parking on street is restricted in certain locations durign rush hour, as we all know. This provides that extra lane. Downtown street are mostly 4 lanes. so you get three lanes at least for traffic.

Flip side is we shouldn't be catering to traffic so who really gives a hoot lol

Any government would be doing this especially considering they took over a couple months after the NDP budget was approved. That is, the generous budget they created as a last ditch effort to stay in power.

I think you're misremembering - there was no NDP budget in 2016. There was an (unusual) winter fiscal update. It was never passed.

I agree that there were a lot of last ditch reelection effort projects announced before the election, but the Cancercare expansion has been in the works for years. I'd be surprised if it didn't get greenlighted within this government's first term.

It's nice!

I do not know the full details but have been told that some office workers with flex hours start early so the first two hours of parking are "free" then they park at meters which are still $1/hour and start charging at 9 am. You end up paying $6/day compared to $10/day or more in a lot.

Even if you paid for 8 hours with a handicap parking pass doubling your max meter time from 2 hours to 4 hours and a $2/hour meter you would pay $8/day.

That is true if you don't work a normal day shift.

But if you drive downtown everyday and work a 8-5 shift, its cheaper to buy a monthly pass in a lot. Not paying the $10-$12 daily charge, just get a monthly pass. Quick check on Impark and you can get a pass for $180 (depends on lot). Divide that by 21 days (approx average weekdays per month) and you're down to about $8.80/day. Over a single year or someones career and it adds up.

If you work by the $1/hour street parking, that's going to be about $9/day, from 8-5. $2/hr on street obviously is way too much. So I guess it's close. But I wouldn't want to run the risk of getting a ticket. I watch all the parking patrol outside everyday, writing tickets. So you forget one day, or you get tied up in a meeting. Get a ticket and there goes your savings on parking for the year.

Then if you park in any of the rush hour zones, well you'd have to move your car by 3pm. Go find another spot, your boss is wondering where the hell you keep going.

Just seems stupid to be doing this to try and save a buck. And then do that for 20-30 year career, paaaleese lol

People are ridiculous. A one storey, small accounting firm, with day time traffic is just unacceptable.

I swear, people hear the word "office" and their minds go to the Richardson Building.

Another bonus to monthly parking is if you are in a lot where your monthly is for 24 hours a day and you don't have to pay the extra for event parking downtown.

When I lived in the south end I parked in the lot right across from the Marlborough and I think it was $175/month for 24-7 random parking. Anytime I was downtown for a Jets game or a concert I would just park in the lot and not have to pay the event parking.

I played this parking game working at the former Canada Post facility downtown for 6 months on an assignment. No more than $6 bucks, unless I got lazy on any given day and used underground parking.

Perfect. Event parking is around $10-$15 per event.

^ A lot of places have ceased that practice... I used to have a parking spot at RBCCC and I had access to my monthly spot for Moose games and other evening events. That ended when the Jets came back... many downtown parkade and parking lot monthly spaces became 6-6 at that point.

I agree with you. That said few people work nine hour days, eight hours is much fairer when doing estimates for office workers. The advantage for paying daily as you don't pay for sick days or vacation days. If you have a monthly pass all those get counted in too so that would be about $80/year in saving just for skipping paying monthly.

Over 52 weeks there are 260 working days and 12 stats, 15 vacation days and say 5 sick days. That gives us 228 days in which work related parking is required. With a monthly cost of $180/month the daily cost would be $9.47/day. Parking on street at a $1/hour meter would be $8/day. No one parking on the street all day to "save money" is parking at a $2/hour meter unless they are running a different setup which nets them a bigger saving. That is a savings of $335.16 a year or over a 30 year career $10,054.80.

While it sounds crazy that math seems to support it. That is without even getting into the ideas of "free" parking or the less than $1/hour spots some people are into.

the house is the little white house looking one across from coronation park....the house is derelict...to assume someone else will build a new single family home on st. mary's road is delusional....we will see what the councillors have to say.

the funny thing is the allowable zoning permits a duplex almost twice the size on the property right now....

I live in the area and have not weighed in on FB about it as I never saw the design (it's a beauty btw) nor did I ever hear what it was being used for. All I heard was "commercial" and "lots of traffic". Now that I've seen this and am more informed, I will be posting my opinion on our community FB page and hope me or my children don't get sacrificed on the cross.
