Holy shit. Case report for a project on the big parking lot on 8th/fig. Doesn't say there, but it tells you when you hover over the link to it from the list of all the case reports that it will be 43 stories and 436 units. Hopefully this doesn't take up the whole lot and just a part of it, but if it takes up the whole thing I hope it doesn't go through because our next supetall should go on that lot.
Great find! I really hope that this is just one tower in the corner, leaving room for a few more. If done right, that site (along with the parking structures and empty lot on flower) can handle a half dozen 40 to 80 story towers. Ideally, we get several towers with different architects with all parking below ground

That's pretty good news. I wonder if that's why there was that construction equipment there a few months ago. I would be totally fine with it as long as it's only on the corner or something. We need density, not a single tower with a podium taking up an entire city block.

Based on ZIMAS I think it's suppose to take up about a quarter of the block.

VESTING TENTATIVE TRACT MAP PER SEC. 17.15 TO MERGE (5) LOTS AND RE-SUBDIVIDE THE LAND INTO (1) GROUND LOT.

Seems the 8th and Fig project is trying to make one big lot, no?

That's just a staging area for Wilshire grand equipment

Each lot is about 30 feet deep. This building will have about the same ground size as the 8th and spring buildings.

Probably more comparable to 8th/Olive.

Oh thanks for clearing that up. My viewpoint was playing tricks on me. It should be happening this summer though right?

Yes, September is supposed to be the true topping out.

Looks like we have 1 more floor to go on Circa's podium before we see the individual towers start to rise. Also looks like 801 Olive has only has 1-2 more floors to go before it's topped out.

Very exciting!

Yup. Add to that the core for one of the Oceanwide towers is above street level and a large part of that project will be rising above street level any week now. If you go back and look near the end of the previous thread just 4 months ago that project was just a huge hole in the ground and we were wondering whether or not it was actually dead. What a difference a few months make! I don't know that I've seen a project move as fast as that one is now. They had workers on site for both the Sunday before Memorial Day and Memorial Day itself.

I love seeing the new buildings going up and even with wilshire grand, metropolis 1/2, ten50, and 8th/olive topped out or topping out soon we'll still have more under construction a year from now than we do now. An amazing time for DTLA! Looking forward to seeing all the newer ones going up.

They still have to erect the crown which will add I believe another 100 feet to the overall height--then comes the approximately 166 foot spire. Interestingly, I've always felt a spire would be most aesthetically pleasing if it were at least proportioned to 1/4 the height of a tower. With the WG it is not and so it appears to be a little stubby for the buildings height. If we went by the 1/4 ratio the spire would be 233 feet tall and the overall tower would be 1,167 feet tall. Not a really big deal, but I'll bet the next supertall to be built in San Francisco will be over 1,100 feet. Maybe the "height" issue is just a guy thing

The roof of the building itself goes up to 934, and the spire is 100 ft tall, so does that mean the parapet is only 66 feet tall? So wait does the spire start from the roof?

Thanks for the images, Hunter. I wonder about the positive financial effect of all these construction workers in DTLA. There must be thousands, right?

^ absolutely astounding how much blood, sweat & tears are required to create a major proj like wilshire grand....from the architects & engineers, to the fabricators, to all the workers who have to install everything, & all the ppl in between. Makes me dizzy just thinking about it, even more since, although I do love tall towers, I'm also rather acrophobic.

I hope the tower will have more steel framing occurring at the top since the bldg still looks noticeably shorter, esp as viewed from a distance, than the AON bldg, much less the US bank tower.

COS is the latest retailer to occupy an old DTLA theater
H&M's sister brand is opening store in former Olympic Theater

credit: cinematreasures.org

Historic theaters in L.A. are adopting a new function: retail.

COS, the upscale sister store of fast fashion empire H&M, is opening a store in the former Olympic Theater at 313 West 8th Street.

At 5,500 square feet, this store will be COS’ third store in L.A. and fourth in the state, Women’s Wear Daily reported. The company has agreed to restore the original looks of the 1920s-built structure, including the revamping of the facade and the classic Olympic sign.

As for the look of the store inside, the design will run parallel to that of COS’ clothing: clean, sleek and utilitarian. The first floor and mezzanine will have steel rails, while the backdrop will be made of glass, concrete and wood.

COS joins other fashion retailers in DTLA as certain pockets experience a retail renaissance. Nearby, Urban Outfitters opened a store in the Rialto Theatre on Broadway before moving in three years ago. There are yet-to-be-confirmed rumors, noted by both the blogger Brigham Yen and the L.A. Business Journal, that even Apple might soon take up a spot in DTLA at the Tower Theater on Broadway. Sweden’s Acne Studio, Australia’s Aesop and BNKR are also in the area.

^ across the street from the old may co bldg, now being renovated, & 2 blocks west of the frankentower projs. In all the yrs I've gone by there, I never realized an old theater existed on the north side of 8th st. New apt bldgs in the immediate vicinity are even more crucial to nicer stores since, in order to stay in business, they depend upon the type of customer who can afford the level of rent that apt projs like the holland partners towers will be charging.

The steel "fin" atop Wilshire Grand will be roughly as high as the three levels at the top with the diagonal beams. At least that's what the renders suggest.

Great shots, Hunter!!
