I'd agree with this. I really like how BC Place looks nowadays, it's right up there with IGF for me.

We are lucky in Winnipeg to have such a nice stadium, it really feels "big league" when you're in there on a packed gameday vs the old CanadInns stadium. Heard so many great things from outta-towners for FIFA Womens 2015 last summer.

The saving grace for IGF is that the shortcomings of the place (drainage/waterproofing issues, etc.) have no impact on the actual fan experience and game atmosphere. From that standpoint it is spectacular.

Isn't the location a bit of a shortcoming as well? Friend of mine says it isn't exactly easy to get to and there's a lack of parking and no rapid transit. Speaking of which, is Winnipeg ever going to build an LRT? I've never heard of any plans.

I don't think the stadium location is the greatest, but it isn't terrible either. Frankly, the biggest problem with the location is the fact that the city didn't hustle to get the SW BRT line built for the stadium's opening. That's not the stadium's fault, it's really the city dropping the ball on getting this done.

Right now transit flow in and out of the stadium area on gamedays is bad. Fortunately, they have begun working on completing the SW BRT line to IGF... the line won't be done until the 2020 season but at the very least the IGF BRT station will be open next year and that will make a pretty big difference in the interim for transit users and drivers alike, as it will unclog the roads around the stadium.

And no plans for LRT. BRT only.

So your saying that traffic is great on non-game days. Well that would make it a major shortcoming.

Edmonton's population was around 480,000 when they opened their LRT in 1978, Calgary was around 590,000 when they opened their LRT in 1981. Winnipeg is currently at around 720,000 so one would think that LRT might be happening soon but maybe there's just not that need there yet.

I suspect that a few factors go into the decision to go with BRT over LRT but in Winnipeg's case it's not easy to compare its situation with Calgary or Edmonton.

Alberta has been drowning in oil money for a long time. On top of that the growth rates have been astronomical for decades. Put it all together and the only option that makes any sense is LRT. They also had the advantage in planning because those cities had less old infrastructure to plow through and could build their systems to be successful.

Winnipeg's footprint is generally older and much slower growing. On top of that the cash just isn't there. Remember, we're talking about a city that was stagnant for a decade and has been hit hard by the changing realities of modern economies. Lots of reverence for the past and little thought to planning for a successful future. My biggest beef with this city has always been the lack of vision.

BRT was sold to the citizenry as an interim measure. Something like Ottawa's very successful Transitway. At the time it was first seriously proposed, we had a visionary mayor but too many people had a problem with change so we elected an old-school businessman who really didn't think the future included environmentally sound mass transit systems. His plan was a "made in Winnipeg" solution whereby we installed a few priority signals and bus lanes in selected areas because it was the cheapest solution. Now we've got a guy with a little more vision but it remains to be seen if he follows through.

And Ottawa will have a population of over a million once our first, very short, LRT line opens. If your city doesn't grow at an extremely fast rate (like Edmonton and Calgary), starting with BRT for a few decades isn't a terrible idea.

More information has been released about the West End Zone party deck at TD Place. It will be known as the Subaru Log Cabin.

From the REDBLACKS website

Quote:
The Subaru Log Cabin will be a two-level patio structure for approximately 200 fans themed to fit within the REDBLACKS popular lumberjack story. The first level will be an accessible food and beverage area, stretching the width of the field, where fans can celebrate together only a few yards from the end line. The second level of the Log Cabin will house one of the many models of Subaru vehicles known for their driving excellence under all Canadian weather and terrain conditions.
The area will be ticketed separately from the rest of the stadium, so ticketholders from other parts of the stadium can't casually drop in and watch from there.

Good... I hate lounges that encourage people to meander over and stand, leaving empty seats in the stands. However, I don't know what you could really hope to see from that area... the game would probably be purely incidental from there.

I think that's mostly the point.

I am fairly familiar with the layout and sightlines at Lansdowne and I am pretty sure you'll be able to watch the game from that new terrasse. If you want to.

I'm hopelessly old fashioned in that I like to put down my money for a ticket in order to actually watch the game.

From that rendering it looks like the area is raised no more than a couple of feet off the field... I doubt you'd really be able to see much past midfield. Hopefully there will be plenty of TVs.

Same, but people like going for the event...if something happens then something happens, otherwise they can at least hang out and drink and snapchat.

Looks like part of it will be quite low in fact, and part of it will be higher.

In the end, I suppose it won't be that different from the view of the game many players get from the sidelines.
