A couple of pictures celebrating our direct flight to London. Now we have direct flights to Dublin/London with WestJet, and London with Air Canada. They're all (especially the WestJet ones) doing exceptionally well - people are even using them just to access cheaper European fares to other world destinations.

Not so much for Dublin, but I would think that would be the biggest attraction for London. From London to the world!

For other continents, definitely London. But for Europe, Dublin seems to be offering enough, at least for the handful of people I know who've done it. RyanAir alone can get you just about anywhere on the continent for near pocket change compared to what it costs us to fly to a major Canadian hub and back to Europe.

Yes, I could see that for Dublin - plus you would get to avoid the heartburn of Heathrow.

No direct flights St. John's - Edmonton? That seems very odd to me considering the number of east coasters who work in northern Alberta.

I don't think we could support direct flights to Edmonton and Calgary, so assuming they had to choose one of the two, Calgary is - in my estimation - the more appropriate choice. There are a lot of Newfoundlanders working in the executive and office side of Alberta's oil and gas industry as well, and anecdotally at least, there seems to be a larger expat community in Calgary than in Edmonton. Employers pay for chartered flights for the commuting workers anyway, so it makes no difference to them whether they land in Calgary or Edmonton first. I'd imagine it's not even a significant cost difference for the employers.

Air China canceled PVG-SJC, and now China Southern cancels CAN-YYZ. Are Chinese carriers beginning to choose their next destinations by throwing a dart at a dartboard?

More or less, XMN-SZE-SEA is one of the more ridiculous ones I've ever seen.

They're definitely still in expansion mode though. Air China just announced they are going to 17 flights per week for peak summer season on PEK-YVR.

Chatting with my uncle today - as part of a larger conversation he mentioned why YYT is located in the infamously foggy east end of St. John's. The air base that became the airport was purposely put there in hope the Germans wouldn't be able to see and bomb it due to fog. Always wondered why it was put in the foggiest possible area.

It would be really cool if WS allowed for extended layovers at no extra charge in St. John's. It would be a great way for me to visit Newfoundland en route to Europe (seeing as how YYT is practically halfway to LHR for me).

Yes. Like Iceland Air - you can stop over for up to 7 nights (either way and visit Iceland) when flying Europe (any destination served) via Reykjavik at no extra charge.

The program applies to all 3 of their main intl hubs being YYZ, YUL and YVR.

Never noticed it to be as well advertised as the KEF one though. Iceland Air is probably responsible for half of the country's entire tourism industry from that promotion. Brilliant really.

It would be nice - but I imagine we'd need more international destinations for it to be sensible.

PAL could do it, as our provincial airline it'd definitely be in their interest, but they have few mainland routes and they're probably more expensive than just flying here.

There probably isn't any incentive for Westjet or AirCanada as a business to allow passengers extended spot overs in St.John's considering that these flights are mostly a refuelling/pick-up-extra-passengers stop to the UK. It would also add to the extra logistics for ticketing and re-boarding passengers etc.
With this new 3days/week London run, this makes two non-seasonal international destinations out of StJohn's now, one in US and one in UK? Cheerio!

I think it's the old Air Canada direct to London that's not seasonal, but I don't yet know.

Qatar Cargo to commence Halifax in July. Guess all those Lobsters going onto the YUL-DOH flight will now be loaded on the new Halifax flight!

Shame about the 0320 arrival time, that would be great to see in the daylight. We've had them come through YYC on a couple of one-off flights over the last few years. Horse related I believe.
