Some stunningly good architecture, but have to say, the emptiness of the Greyhound depot is the shot I keep going back to. Amazing.

But the photo I'd frame and put on the wall would be the stark emptiness of the Greyhound depot!

Thought I'd get up on one of the roofs this afternoon, managed to get a few pix but those damn falcons wanted to rip my face off. I am moving on to bigger & better things here very soon so hope I can get up there one more time (with my good camera) before I go

Great shots! Your "bad camera" shots are better than some people's DSLR shots. Composition & knowing the quirks/limitations of your gear goes a long, long way.

I'll haul my DSLR & some lenses up to work sometime this next week before I stop being a Downtown office worker (praise jeebus!) & move on to greener pastures myself.

If I remember and/or have the time/inclination between trying to wrap up all my reports & work here.

^ oh I'm not moving far with mixed emotions though, my company is fantastic and I love the challenge of managing the operations of our complex.. It's really nothing like any other complex in the downtown as I have quasi- industrial central plants servicing all my buildings. But my new building is modern, efficient and full of technology you just don't get in a 40 year old complex. Plus I don't have sins of the past to contend with

I don't mind working downtown, it's a challenging and "colourful" environment to say the least!

City officials are for the second time this year saying no to a massive residential tower.

The Emerald Tower, planned for Jasper Avenue and 114 Street, would soar 45 storeys and cast a thin shadow all the way to the north end of 104 Avenue’s Oliver Square in the winter.

That’s three times the height currently allowed on the empty lot and double the height of most towers in the residential Oliver neighbourhood. It soars above the four- to six-storey condos north of the site that make this already one of the most dense areas of the city. The rezoning application goes to council June 13.

While the developer argues he needs the height to make the two-bedroom units affordable, the community league worries this will set a precedent and lead to a “canyon wall” along Jasper Avenue, blocking light for thousands of residents. The city says it’s just too much, out of place, and without enough benefits for the neighbourhood.

“The question is, what is the right height,” said Peter Ohm, Edmonton’s chief city planner. His department supported The Pearl, a 36-storey tower just six blocks west, and rezoning for three 40-storey-plus towers on the Healy Ford site in downtown’s warehouse district. But he’s not sure it would do that again.

“There’s an evolution in thinking,” he said, and a lot of unanswered questions: The developer says it needs the height to make the economics work, but is the neighbourhood getting enough in return? If the city allows 45 storeys on this one site, will the other muddy parking lots around downtown ever get rebuilt?

“What kind of a city does Edmonton want to be?” he asked. “There’s only so much demand. It’s finite. … We need to have a better understanding of the economics.”

Raj Dhunna, chief operations officer for Regency Developments, said he needs the height to make the 800-square foot, two-bedroom units attainable for many Edmontonians. If he can build 273 units on the site and include three storeys of parking in the podium rather than underground, he can start the units at $350,000.

I've always liked this about 103st and 104st. To me it's something that makes Edmonton, Edmonton. Of course there's contrast between podium and tower, but again IN MY OPINION it makes for a pleasant experience at street level. Of course from aerial shots it looks disjointed, but when walking down the street you get a feeling of the tower being a separate entity from the "faux old-timey" podiums. Don't worry, The arena district will have a bunch of boring standard big city glass podiums a la Vancouver/Toronto... My only worry is based on seeing that tower spacing at foxes in real life. I know it's been discussed here at length already, but seeing fox 2 rise.. Damn those are close buildings lol

I don't mind working downtown, it's a challenging and "colourful" environment to say the least!

I'm not moving terribly far, just will be commuting more north than west going forward. EPCOR Tower has been lovely to work in but absolutely terrible to get to/from work.

Yeah, there's not a single one that doesn't look faker than Main Street, Disneyland. I'm not against the idea of trying to maintain a little cohesion, but the devil is in the details & they're just too slapdash & disjointed to really pull it off.

A brick box in Downtown does not an "Urban Warehouse" make.

Before the Arena was enclosed I would stare out the windows at work as the falcons gyred around the updraft that came out of the half-completed bowl. Around & around they went, upward & onward until I couldn't see them even through the giant, ceiling-high windows.
