Check the budgets for the Link extension. They are orders of magnitude higher than any budgets Translink has or is looking at for expansion and renovation.

The Main Street Station renovations were horrible. They redid some of the crappy paint job, but the misaligned class will forever show how shoddy it was.

I went on the west elevator at the recently fully renovated Main street station and it was really slow and ugly. And this is on a station that just had a full reno. Did they put a completely new elevator in there or just refitted the old one?

They widened the shaft and installed an entirely new elevator. Same with New Westminster. They're just cheap and slow elevators. I don't think any of our elevators new or old are terribly fast. I recall Burrard takes FOREVER.

Maybe they kept them slow on purpose to discourage people who don't need to use them.

Short elevators are usually hydraulic piston elevators, not on cables, so they are slower (like in many lowrise condos).

Yeah - Sound Transit spent almost $1million on the opening party for the Capitol Hill and University Stations:

About a year and a half of demolition and construction at Commercial/Broadway Station. Not much happened from the spring to fall of 2015.

I see some dark areas where the new framing/roof meets the old space frame -

Looks more like unpainted areas that are ready for welding. Once that last column is up they can commit the welds, remove the temporary supports and begin bringing down the wall.

Joyce Station East station house is now almost completely demolished. Escalator is gone, station walls are gone. Just a few hanging pieces remain.

Almost all mesh panels on the north side of Joyce station platform level have been removed.

It's always been there, it just used to be smaller.

There's also a picture out there somewhere that shows only a stairway which I believe was the original configuration.

Yes. The east station house was expanded in size around 2013 in order to accommodate the fare gates.
The demolition basically wiped out all that work so unfortunately there is a lot of waste.
But who could have foreseen fare gate was not fully closed until 2 months ago?

There was probably an emergency exit stairway there.

I guess my question is: what's happened in past three years that they suddenly need to trash all the previous work and do it over again? It's not like all the condos weren't already there. Shouldn't it have been obvious 3 years ago that this kind of expansion would have been needed, and wouldn't it have been smarter to do it along with the faregate installation?

It would have been smarter for sure. However, if the government doesn't give you money to do it and you don't know if they ever will, the options are pretty limited.

There is still no funding for the "phase 2" expansion for Joyce station.
Also with the COV's Joyce-Collingwood Station Precinct Plan review almost completed, there will be further increase of passenger traffic.
I don't know whether the expanded station will be able to handle the volume. The west station house also needs some improvement too.

Yeah I'm scratching my head over that one too. Funding or not, it's EXTREMELY bad PR when you demolish a newly completed expansion because you couldn't expand onto it. That just rolls down to retarded planning.

Oh god. What if this is a sign of things to come on future expansions?

What network was it that was constantly ragging on TransLink? Was it CTV? Someone push this along and see what kind of media attention you can stir up.
