Cool! I'm very impressed with the entire project/district. Have most of the people who were vehemently opposed to it before it was approved changed their minds?

Love this, but feat the old value engineering will usurp.

Jesus...Regina's Stadium is so cool. In a small town...this Stadium screams big city.

Interesting thing I find about the roof is that the translucent panels give off a bit of a European or Asian vibe... those types of canopies are fairly common in warmer countries, but it's certainly unusual in Canada.

Ya BC Place's side panels are translucent (and led charged) but the roof panels are more opaque white.

Regina's stadium looks wicked, solid contender for top 3 for most beautiful stadiums in the country with Winnipeg at #1 and Rogers Center at #2, IMHO. Montreal and BC Place are also lovely but not sure where they'd rank, might be contenders for #2 and #3.

^ Montreal is all about the setting with the leafy green trees and urban backdrop, but the stadium itself is pretty old and really not that amazing. Not a lot of creature comforts in there either... it's almost entirely bench seating.

I like the place and I think it's a good place to watch a game, but I wouldn't rank it near the top when it comes to stadiums in Canada.

First thing I thought of when I saw these most recent pictures. Looks like a stadium out of Japan or Malaysia.

Here's Niigata Stadium:

And here's Shizuoka Stadium:

Moses Mabhida Stadium in South Africa:

Etc. etc.

I think he might be referring to Olympic Stadium rather than Molson.

Not being a homer, but I do like the New Mosaic Stadium more than IGF in Winnipeg. In any case, my top 3 would be BC Place, New Mosaic, and Commonwealth... there's still just a classic elegance to Commonwealth. Olympic and IGF would round out my top 5, though Olympic needs a lot of work. Rogers Centre is nice, but doesn't quite reach the others for me.

With the new Mosaic, I'm quite surprised as how bright and airy it's looking with the white roof supports, the white-ish fabric (that will bleach whiter with time), the light colouration of the concrete. Hopefully they follow through and can host the test events, I'd love to check it out and walk around this fall.

And the pic of Moses Mabhida Stadium in South Africa looks like it could be the love child of Olympic Stadium in Montreal and Berlin's Olympiastadion, at least from that inside view.

Not ,no. A lot of people were seduced by the dozens of random museums and attractions of the other bid. Not everyone seems to understand reality and good urban planning.

In fact, the opposing group, DCDLS, sent a threatening letter to the NCC right before the teams were no longer allowed to speak publicly about the competition.

Couple things they touched on were the lack of "Nationally significant attractions" (such as a second rate aquarium and pavilions dependant on non-committed, 100% outside funding), the fact that Rendez-Vous (RV) will have the chance to improve on their project during the negotiations (cause the NCC shouldn't be allowed to work with the winning proponent to perfect the proposal I guess) oh, and the best one, where DCDLS lost any speck of credibility left; the clincher for RV was the proposal to cover the Confederation Line through the site, something DCDLS says they looked into but concluded it is not financially feasible and would cause major disruptions to rail service (Calgary, did you get the memo? You can't build your library over the C-Train. Just not possible. Wait, you've already started!?)

And link to the article about RV's rational on covering the Confederation Line.

That arena is damn impressive looking. If there's an award for building of the year in Canada it should win.

Rogers Place tour shows downtown Edmonton arena readying for September debut

BILL MAH

The last time Rogers Place opened its doors to the public, fans braved frigid January temperatures for a look inside the new downtown arena. They also had to use their imaginations to get a sense of the finished product, since it was little more than a bare concrete bowl with a roof.

Four months later, about 950 workers are toiling 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to put the finishing touches on the arena in time for its debut — an open house Sept. 10.

“In January when people came in, I was afraid that just seeing the bones of the building that day that people might be underwhelmed, but there was a tremendous level of excitement that day and I can only imagine what the level of excitement will be when this building is turned on,” said Bob Black, executive vice-president of the Edmonton Arena Corp.

Tons more of my photos from the media event here:

That scoreboard is RIDICULOUS by the way. Photos really don't do it justice. As big as you think it is...it's bigger than that.

^ Great pics, Dave. I like the nice, wide concourses... that's one thing that the MTS Centre is really missing.

^ Thanks! I'm not even a hockey guy, but just love this building.

Here's my write-up on the tour:
