Add to that economic benefit indicators from Vancouver hosting the most recent rugby 7s tournament.

HSBC Canada Sevens
In March 2016, the inaugural Canada Sevens, part of the World Rugby Sevens Series, generated an estimated $10million+ in economic benefit. Over 60,000 fans took in the weekend-long tournament, setting a new record for attendance at a rugby event in Canada! Many of those visiting traveled to Vancouver from places around the world, including Hong Kong, New Zealand, Ireland and Fiji – just to name a few! The annual event is to be held at BC Place for at least four years.

FIFA World Cup Qualifiers
In a just a year span, a total of three FIFA World Cup Qualifying matches are to be hosted at BC Place Stadium. The growing popularity of Canada’s Men’s National Team has influenced a dramatic jump in attendance numbers for these type of matches – thus an increase in direct spending. A total of 54,798 fans watched team Canada take on Mexico in March 2016 – a new Canadian national record for attendance at a national team event, at home, in any sport!

When you have permanent lines, you simply cannot cross that bridge as the decision has already been made. Being a smaller market, you have to be even flexible that other cities so to seize the chance when it arises.

Wow, reading through all this, get a life folks.

What is done is done. Permanent markings way to go Regina! No need to waste time and money painting something that will be the main sport 99% of the time in this stadium.

If and when the Men's national soccer team wants to play Ethiopia, Estonia, or even Andorra in Regina I'll chip in some money for new turf, until then it ain't going to happen. No big game is going to be thrown the way of Regina and Saskatchewan.

Wow you read through all that? Get a life man!

Regina sure as hell wont host any big soccer or rugby games with that attitude. Wonder if moncton had the same attitude prior to being awarded wwc games.

Brb though. Need to get a life and stop posting about stadiums in this thread because this holier than thou poster told me to.

How many WWCs will we host in the next 10 years?

And you mention these rugby tournaments, that's only Vancouver (the 3rd biggest city with a 50k+ stadium)... What are Winnipeg, Hamilton, and Moncton getting in the next 10 years? Other than a friendly here and there (which wouldn't bring in that much money), what is Ottawa getting? Edmonton may get some stuff over the next 10 years, but it's always been in the mix.

It's not about "giving up", it's about being reasonable in expectations and deciding to spend the money where it matters most to the people who are paying for the stadium. I really don't get why so many people are so worked up about this.

Maybe in 8-10 years, when the turf is up for replacement, we'll look at different options then.

Thats fine. No rugby or soccer matches for regina then.

Meanwhile ill look out my back window and wonder how a community soccer field in my backyard can be lined once a week but a $300 million facility felt it was too much of a cost to bear.

And Ottawa is getting a sold out womens soccer match against the states next month.

Feel free. You can also rest easy knowing you didn't contribute any money to said project either.

Numbers are skewed for Hamilton because of Pan-Am hosting. Incomplete history for Women's friendlies. This doesn't include Mens U23/U20/U18 friendlies or Womens U20/U18 friendlies.

I suppose Regina can try to get the Vanier Cup bid away from Hamilton, Quebec City, and Halifax in the future.

Let be realistic about the possibilities for the next 8-10 years...

Neither the Pan-Am games nor the Olympics will be hosted in Regina and Canada isn't even involved in the bidding process for 2023 Pan Ams, so that's moot.

The World Cup Tournaments (be they Men's, Women's, U20, etc) all take years of planning and preparation and we would already have a general idea if Canada was thinking of putting in a bid for an event that would take place over the next 8-10 years... so far the only rumbling is the very slim chance of the Men's World Cup bid, in which case, grass would likely have to be installed everywhere making the permanent vs painted lines argument moot as well (to the outrage of the women's teams of course). Those tournaments aren't spur of the moment, "oh, well, Regina has a stadium with painted lines and it's available next spring, let's use it!" type decisions.

The 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup won't be hosted in Regina either. Canada has only had a minor hosting role once... and it was in Toronto. No way we bypass Montreal, Vancouver, Edmonton, or a 2nd Toronto hosting in the next 10 years.

That leaves us with your friendlies list (or even WCQ which aren't listed)... and it is filled with the usual cities other than the 1 lone Hamilton appearance, which is right next door to one of the usual cities. They also have very little financial or "social/visibility" impact to make the cost worth it. Droves of people aren't going to travel from around the country to see a friendly in Regina.

If there was an upcoming major tournament Canada was planning on hosting and Regina was on the short-list of cities considered, then yeah, I'd fully expect them to use a turf with painted lines, but since we don't, I'm apathetic about the whole thing. Sorry

Sorry, I should note WCQ matches are in that grouping as well.

I'm not for or against on this silly line argument - merely providing context.

You're allowed to call them "big" cities.

Where were you when I was being bombarded on here for being insensitive in implying that people wouldn't want to travel to Swift Current to watch curling?

Droves of people don't travel across the country for very many sporting events; the country is too big and too expensive to travel around. That's why strong local and regional ad campaigns, and support, are vital to events going well when they're hosted in x city. That's why Moncton did so well last year and why Ottawa consistently has some of the best attendances for these events.

If anything, International events draw international tourists, which is where a lot of your economic spinoffs come from. It was nice running into Women's National Teams out and about in Ottawa, trust me.

it appears we agree to disagree.

however you didn't mention that the new president of Concacaf is for the first time ever Canadian and he would like to explore the possibility of having Canada host a segnment of the Gold Cup every 2 years allowing for rotation of stadiums in Canada.

not to mention U23 qualifying both men and women.

all the other new stadiums figured it out. their names are in the hat to potentially host rugby and soccer. unfortunately Regina wont be an option when the stadium opens

How much would it cost to purchase a push line painter and have one of the members of the proposed grounds keeping crew use it?

Over the next 8-10 years, other cities will have shown their support for our national teams and will have build a rapport with the CSA/Rugby Canada.

According to this article $250 is the cost of the paint per game. About $7,200 a year for the paint.

http://www.selmatimesjournal.com/2013/08...t-go-into-getting-football-fields-ready/

According to this article a fancy compressor driven painter is $1,000 to $3,000 dollars and it costs about $180 worth of paint each time they paint the field.

However regular aerosol painters like the one seen in the THF photo are only $100.

Wasn't really thinking about the size of the cities in that spot... Just that they are the usual hosts. Size likely has and will have an affect on it though.

Must have missed that... I poke in once in a while, but I've largely become disinterested in much of the national topics/media, but that's a topic for another thread.

In any case, I was moreso thinking about the fact that other than the one game in Vancouver, the NMT and NWT don't even really sell out the stadiums in the cities/stadiums they usually play in, so if people aren't even willing to travel within their cities, they're not going to travel across the country.

But your other points are valid... It definitely takes strong local support/organization. As for the international competition/teams/tourism... Canada isn't really planning on bidding to host any such competitions at this point, so until then... this temporary decision is one that I just don't care that much about. If over the next 10 years Winnipeg, Ottawa, and Moncton are counting their millions and basking in their international fame and adoration from hosting one or two prestigious friendlies, maybe I'll say "if only..."

This is only something that's come about over the past few years and should only continue to grow and prosper as the country develops. The CSA seems to know what its strong suit is and is trying its best to reach its goals, like getting over 50K+ to MNT games in Vancouver. I have no doubt the WNT game here in Ottawa will do well on the 7th. If there's tickets leftover when I get back in town i'd love to check it out. I have a busy enough football-watching schedule on my plate as is

There seems to be this potential WC bid with America and Mexico floating around in the air. Indeed, if there is a joint bid, I imagine the Canadian venues would be Toronto and Vancouver - as they should be. I imagine Edmonton and Montreal would be on that second tier of potential hosts, although any World Cup matches at the O are nothing but a pipedream.

It's surely a leap of the imagination to think that places like Winnipeg and Moncton would capture international awe and annually benefit from that but, quite frankly, they've done more to garner that than Regina has or will continue to with their decision for an American Football-only stadium. It's fine, it just closes the door on other options.

Rest assured sleepy little Saskatchewan and Regina don't really care about painted vs permanent lines.

The rest of the country can rant and rave all you want, but it's Regina's decision, they madeit. Live with it or not.
