Maybe the powers that be in Regina based their decision on no reasonable expectations that they might be hosting a FIFA endorsed event. Put it this way, are there any Olympic sized ice rinks in Regina?

Let's face it, there will be on the order of 20+ football games a year in there and if NMS had the right field, perhaps one important soccer match a decade. At the end of the day it's not a lot they're walking away from. And considering that fieldturf seems to have an inservice life of maybe a little over a decade, they'll easily be able to reconsider their decision when the time comes to replace the rug.

I see NMS as a bit like BMO circa 7 or 8 years ago. Optimized for one sport because there is simply no one else interested in using it on a regular basis for another sport, but which could be easily modified to accommodate the other sport if the need arises.
I can understand that. Like you and all the other venues I would have gone with the painted lines.

Cheers

When the Olympics were held in Vancouver they used NHL size ice rinks.

When the World Champs were held in Quebec City/ Halifax they used NHL size ice rinks.

Olympic sized aren't needed to host Olympics/ World Jrs/ IIHF world champs.

Would it have cost them too much to leave the door open? It's not even for CSA matches alone, painted lines could improve the aesthetics for other non-CFL events as well no?

I'm not sure what other sports events there could be... looking at 3 years worth of IGF in Winnipeg, I think soccer and football are the only sports events that have been held there. Perhaps there has been some lower-level high school field hockey or some such, but that's about it.

In the event that Regina is awarded a FIFA-grade soccer event, couldn't they just paint over the permanent football lines with washable green paint? I checked - that's a thing.
http://worldclasspaints.com/product/79/Removable-Artificial-Turf-Paint-Premium-Ready-to-Use-Green

Since the majority of sport events in that stadium are expected to be football, I don't think it's unreasonable to go with the stitched-in lines.

because it looks like sh*t and you can never match the paint perfectly to the green field nor fully cover the lines. not to mention the hash marks are all stitched in so theres hundreds of uneven seems that will cause the ball to not roll properly. its not FIFA approved

this is what it looks like when you "paint over the lines in green"....

painting on the lines isn't difficult and would have added greater flexiblity

Are we talking about a 2026 FIFA World Cup bid? If so its really not hard to do the math, in the unlikely event Canada gets the WC, let alone even qualify for it... How many CFL games will be held in Regina over the next 10 seasons, including grey cups? Let's say 100, using round numbers, being the amount of times they'd have to paint on the lines for each game, given that the weather affects the quality of the lines, times that by the number of hours required to paint/repaint the lines, times that by the number of people involved each week to paint/repaint the lines. It would be an enourmess amount of cash that would not have to be spent on maintaining the fields lines. Especially when the soccer WC isn't even going to be awarded to Canada. And that's just for CFL games not including CIS.
It's really not hard to understand this concept.

no we're talking about a WCQ in 2017 that Regina attempted to secure but were flat out told they cannot host because they have stitched on lines

6 of 9 CFL teams paint on their lines. the only two who don't are playing in old stadiums. im sure the team that has the highest revenue in the league could afford it. my old highschool paints on their lines once a week as does multpile rec fields in Hamilton... I mean come on

as for how many people it takes.... this is how many people it takes to paint lines on THF......

That's the most important part in your post... "a" (possible) WCQ. We're certainly not going to get more than one or two over the lifetime of the turf. And we're also not going to be home to a soccer team in a high enough division to require lineless fields either.

Yes, the Riders could afford to paint and repaint and repaint over the years (though the City would also have to do so for the CJFL and CIS teams too), but why incur those expenses in the off chance of maybe hosting one or two games that require a markless field? The other stadiums in the CFL that have painted lines either already do double duty with a soccer team or were tipped to host a large event that would require a field without markings soon after completion, and frankly, these stadiums are also in cities that would be much higher in the pecking order for hosting one-off games/events.

So really, it comes down to weighing if it is worth the expense to go without permanent markings for the 1 or maybe 2 events over the lifetime of the turf vs the other 150+ events that will use the markings over that same timespan. For you, it seems to be the case, but for the Riders/Regina/Saskatchewan, it appears that it wasn't.

Also, it's the Regina community soccer association pushing for it/a WCQ game, not anyone with direct involvement in the build.

I was under the impression that Regina spent almost $300 million to attract world class events with a worldwide audience for a world class venue.

Installing permanent stitched football lines prevents them from "possibly" attracting those events.

It seems like many aren't bothered by having no chance of attracting those events. So if the residents of Regina aren't worried about missing out on those "possible" events then who am I to complain.

I know I would have ensured the turf was able to host these "possible" events. You dont know if you dont try and bid on them. Seems like a defeatist attitude to pull your name out of the running for major soccer events. But again if the residents dont mind by all means. Premier Mens and Womens soccer matches will continue to be played in Hamilton, Toronto, Mtl, Vancouver, Edmonton, Ottawa. Just not Regina.

Yea One person to make 3 boxes on a soccer field. How many lines / hash marks for football? Yea it's a super easy job but is time consuming. And to do that for CFL / CIS. They obviously don't want to spend money where they don't have to.

You're talking about world class "events" but really you mean a world class soccer "match". What other world class even would require a plain field? As for world class soccer match, why wouldn't they play out of the National Soccer Stadium - BMO.

Because BMO isn't the the National Soccer Stadium anymore. It never really was. That was the name they gave it for the U20 World Cup.

If you paid any attention to the Canadian National team you would have seen that Vancouver has played host to all Mens National WCQ matches this round and will do so for the next match as well, not BMO.

Canada vs. Mexico March 2016 FIFA WCQ

As for the women, they will be playing a friendly at TD Place.

The CSA has decided the National team games in a country as large as Canada need to be spread around on FIFA approved fields.

Also Rugby is also a sport gaining momentum that requires a clean field. For example the well attended Rugby series in Vancouver earlier this year will not be possible at NMS.

To add to this whole discussion, does FIFA not require there to be real grass anyways, especially if they are to hold the world class matches? Everyone saw how TFC supports lost it when they heard they were even going to use the hybrid grass. I may be wrong but Do the men's world class matches not require real grass anyway?

I don't pay any attention to the national soccer program, I stand corrected, thank you.

Mens International World Cup Qualfiers and Friendlies do not require real grass. Just FIFA approved turf with NO permanent stitched football markings.

It will mostly be the various types of football. However, even low level football and sports like field hockey and ultimate frisbee would consider the permanent lines when deciding on a venue. Since the Calgary Soccer Centre went to field turf, I'd take playing a tournament final there than at McMahon. Lower level events are not going to be money makers but if even their organizers are thinking about field markings, painted lines may be more than a simple "nice to have".

Is trying to host a FIFA event in a city of 200,000 people that big of a deal?

I don't blame the Riders for this. Football first and cross the soccer bridge or whatever multi-sport wants to play there when the time is right
