Bottom of a condo tower is more appropriate for a museum and it's still pretty central so they can't have any complaints about access/transit.

They could have given them a smaller corner by the skating rink, or at the site of the hotel. I always thought municipal governments should be taking care of cultural affairs, and not necessarily the private sector. There are practically no cultural attractions near the city centre and Lower Lonsdale areas of North Vancouver.

A similar situation has the Nanaimo Museum occupying space in the Vancouver Island Conference Centre:

Hopefully the ceilings will be tall.

The no-can-do attitude of North Van's City Council is really mind-boggling and retarded. They keep insisting that the museum will do terribly even in a prime tourist location like being next to the Lonsdale Market and ferry terminal. If that's the case, they might as well stop financing the museum entirely. If it's going to do badly at the Lower Lonsdale location, it will do much worse anywhere else in North Van. I guess the City prefers to remain a backwater community.

Thanks for the article, Pinion.

The new location is closer to Lonsdale Quay and the ferry terminal.

Perhaps the city is basing this on facts. Every "community" museum I have visited has always been under utilized. If you want to draw in tourists, you need something more appealing than a local museum.

How many of those community museums are in such a prime tourist belt as Lonsdale Quay? The fact is that this museum already exists and is in a rather desolate place of North Van, so why would the City keep it in the first place if it's already bleeding money? Might as well move it to a better location and improve its exhibits and displays to attract more visitors: students and teachers, families with kids, tourists alike. People love to visit newly updated and refreshing places. In the winter months, visitors have virtually nowhere to go while visiting the Lower Mainland.

If Polygon isn't willing to spare the space for the museum then this will never happen. Do you think the City will approve the museum at the original site if this were the case? I highly doubt it. Sometimes we have to grateful to the developers, although the size of the museum is now quite a bit smaller.

Also I think you're wrong on the size too, won't be much different. Museum staff is happy with it, you're really the only person who has an issue with these plans.

The plans call for interactive exhibit galleries on two floors, multi-purpose areas that would be available for rent, a public lobby and a gift shop — all housed in a 11,900-square-foot space.
New plan: 15,000 square feet.

Great update and great looking project! Very happy to see a strong line of grouting separating the brick panels, instead of an ugly gap. On another thread, someone said that the gaps are necessary for releasing water. If that's the case, is there a costlier solution here?
