2) When I read that the garage would stand until at least 2020, I was deflated. As someone who grew up in the 80's, 2020 conjures up the image of the distant future with hover boards, space colonies, and Taco Bell. It's just crazy how 2020 is less than four years away!
I'm sorry. I meant first Schuylkill Yards tower in 2017, second one in 2018, third in 2019. Fourth in 2020. That's the projected start dates.

That said ... I think a new stadium is mostly a nice-to-have. It isn't like the Sixers are particularly relevant anyway. But you wanna know who else has been jonesing for a better facility for a while?

The Drexel Dragons.

I'm not entirely sure where they would put it (other than "somewhere next to Drexel"), but I could see a joint Sixers/Dragons arena working out. Co-brand it and stuff and Drexel could well use the opportunity to move the Dragons to the higher-profile A-10 (and become a full-time member of the Big 5) as well. Oh, and with a Sixers/Dragons partnership, you can use collegiate fundraising avenues and not try to extort tax breaks out of the city for a team whose previous ownership decimated its fanbase. It'd certainly be win-win for both the team and the school.
Not sure how I missed seeing this earlier, but

The Drexel Dragons (at least those who would control such things) are not jonesing for a better facility. They are perfectly content playing at the "historic" Daskalakis Athletic Center and using the summer months to add lipstick to make it more, as our illustrious AD likes to put it, "boutique." Instead of spending, iirc, $2 million to add HVAC so they didn't have to rent out AC units at $100k a pop for graduation, they've decided to rent out CBP for graduation this year.

The old Drexel Master Plan website had quite a few comments clamoring for a new campus event center. The response was that the administration didn't see a ROI but if anyone wanted to cut a very large check it would be looked into. If Drexel really wanted it, they'd find someone to cut them that very large check. The fact they haven't means they don't want it. Teaming up with the Sixers for a new arena would be foolish, it would be way too big. I thought they should have gone to the Sixers about teaming up for an events center that could also host NBAD and WNBA teams, something that could hold 4-4.5k for DU and the NBAD but be expandable to 6.5-7k for WNBA and any bigger DU games. Put it on the Superblock (Market/JFK/High Line) and create a Victory Park like setup. Instead the NBAD team plays down at Delaware and with the Schuylkill Yards plans taking up all of the space, it will never happen. There just isn't enough Administration/Student/Alumni support for the team, which is ashame for how big the school has gotten.

Nine out of ten (I counted) urbanists agree, Blatstein's Broad & Washington proposal is a bad idea, but this is like bringing a gatling gun to a knife fight:

^^The parking lot, the demolished buildings, and the two lowrise buildings to the left with the Dry cleaners, Nail Salon and ToBox on the ground floor will house a new highrise luxury hotel with ground floor retail. The developer is working on acquiring the two other lowrise buildings. We should be seeing plans soon.

As for the Fitler Square demo, yes it will be replaced with luxury townhomes:

Agreed. As much as I dislike Blatstein's proposal, this legislation sets a very bad precedent, especially considering who introduced it. I( sincerely hope the legislation doesn't pass. How this is even legal I have no idea.

I suppose they'll make them an offer that they can't refuse. I recall a recent article discussing how the current owners had no interest in selling.

That makes me understand why brick cornices were used back in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Having the bricklayer you've already contracted anyway add a decorative flair isn't really much more expensive, labor costs are the only real variable here ... I wonder if anybody ever tried to figure out how much value it adds?

(Yes, I'm suggesting that these houses can really pop with good brickwork. Even something as simple as repurposing old bricks adds character to the façade.)
