Awesome shots, some really unique angles there. Thanks.

Absolutely love the impact that the Singhmar Centre is having on the UW.

Awesome shots as always. The COE tower podium is shaping up real nice, and grand.

Yes Singhmar is going to be great. Has anyone heard of any talks about development down Capital Blvd? Such a shame the street is beautiful now but seems like nothing is happening there.

It certainly needs some development north of Jasper, specifically at 104ave.

Haha. I noticed that a couple days ago too. You can totally read it by looking at it too!

Some fuckbake tried to burn down the Gibson Block. It was one of the clients of the women's shelter.

And I see th Northlands board has been completely revamped, as of today. That was a little unexpected but I can see the direction they're headed now I think... Pretty fundamental changes coming

From the Edmonton Journal: "Investigators believe that an attempt was made to set the building on fire with a lighter. The fire occurred on an upper floor, but water and smoke damage has affected all four floors of the building."

Despicable

An aside but don't blame someone for such an act when you don't know all the facts. This woman likely came from a place of trauma. Your thoughts should at least begin with sympathy.

Exactly. At least this sentiment isn't shared by those directly impacted or involved...

One of the shelter's clients faces arson charges in connection with the blaze, which began in a mattress. Spencer said the shelter will continue to support her.

"We walk along with each person that comes through our doors," she said. "People are coming through our doors because of trauma. Usually there's some sort of trouble within them."

Spencer said the shelter will make sure there is support in place for the 33-year-old woman who was charged.

talk about proving some people live sheltered lives completely oblivious to much of what goes on around them. i hope your mother/sisters/daughters never find themselves needing the services of a shelter like this one but if so they arrive less damaged than the soul you so readily dismiss as a fuckbake. to quote an ex-premier of our province, if you want to see what a fuckbake looks like, look in the mirror.

Isn't that the same Premier that came drunk hurling insults in the men's hostel while the Government paid chauffeur and security waited in the car??? Maybe not the best example Ken.

Uhm, you're mixing up Klein & Prentice.

Maybe not the best rebuttal Trekker.

Yeah...its terrible someone lives in a shelter. My sympathies to anyone who does. There is always more we as a society can do to help people in distress cope with their demons or mental health.

But this does not unequivocally excuse someone from trying to burn down a building and possibly Killing others.

Hope this person gets the help they need.

i was actually referring to the fourth premier after ralph... the one who said we should look in the mirror to see who to blame.

even assuming she was trying to burn down a building rather than simply trying to end her own life without having the skills to associate that with a risk to others is quite a presumptive assumption with potentially tragic consequences...

hopefully she does get the help she needs but the very fact this discussion is taking place means the help that was/is needed wasn't/isn't yet where it should be.

^Agree with this.

Or was it a criminal act.

I for one will wait for the facts on this.

OK guys, my apologies for my thoughtless outburst. I was angry that we almost lost yet another heritage building - and one of my favorites in this city - to a fire.

Thankfully there's nobody in my circles who've needed to go to a women's shelter (that I know of anyway), but if any of them did, I don't want their lives endangered by someone else there.

But once again, I question whether social services is an appropriate use for the Gibson Block. Maybe it made sense 25 years ago when it was abandoned and ready to be demolished. But now, given what the city is trying to do with the area? Given the space limitations the shelter has now, I think they should move to a bigger location that has all the space and facilities that they need, and let the Gibson Block transform into a cornerstone of the Quarters redevelopment.

Maybe I'm being selfish but I see it as a win-win. Though it would be ideal if we didn't need any women's shelters in the first place.

In case you didn't catch it in the links that went along with the photo updates, there's going to be a logo going up on the south face of KR, and given the length it's likely to be Enbridge:
