The new library site is really cool. It's interesting to see the vision for all of the new spaces. I am so interested to see what the Great Reading Room is going to look like. It's really going to be brilliant with all of the windows.

^ What is that ~7 story concrete core for? Stairs or elevator for the library?

From the new Library website, http://yycnewcentrallibrary.com/experience, it looks like there will be essentially two cores and two buildings in a way; the ~7 story core is at the NE corner of an administration building (the fences demarcate the footprint), while the core of the library proper is in the near centre of the image by the green dumpster. I wouldn't be surprised if the administration building is actually built with standard floor heights with the library at double height; this would enable the lovely open building in the renders, but still maintain the massive amount of space needed for admin and operations (about as much floorspace as for books if I remember the competition brief correctly).

At a couple points in history, I had suggested the idea of having an installation somewhere that spoke to the history of Calgary. I'm extremely pleased that the fourth floor of this building will have just that sort of place. Amazing building and thoughtful design. Can't wait!

Amazed they gave away the naming of the fantastic entry hall for a mere $1M though.

Steel is going up very quickly on the South end of the library now. You can see the buildings form taking shape.

Curious why you think you'd never set foot in the building?
