I don't know... at $700k, even in Calgary, you are talking about some high-priced property. Maybe those folks paid far too much in the first place. It's not the first time I've heard about people buying expensive homes and seeing the value drop out of them. I'd suspect that folks with homes closer to the average price are doing much better.

yeah i think they overpaid, it was brand new, still being constructed when they bought it, apparently its in a high priced area of calgary, i have no idea what calgary is like

Your friend's unfortunate circumstances aside, the market in Calgary has been shockingly stable, all things considered. Prices are off 5% to 10% from their peak, depending on the market segment and area of the city. They are still building and selling new homes.

Remember who you're getting the numbers from.
If prices are reportedly off by 5% to 10%, then it's safe to assume it's even more than that. The Real Estate boards are known for massaging their numbers.

Kingsville and Amherstburg are very beautiful historic waterfront towns that offer low housing prices as well as a very high quality of life, and they are within a half an hour drive of a city of 5 million with all of its amenities. Beaches, wineries, festivals and great restaurants abound. There are many great towns in Southwestern Ontario that are desirable. To dismiss everything south and west of Stratford as undesirable is lazy and just wrong!

Obviously it's a spectrum, but its obviously there.

It's one of the feminist brain washing things that people have to pretend does not exist.

Obviously social status is a bit wider of a term than looks.

However the same rules apply.

Obviously there are different types of status, so you tax statement isn't a representation of your relationship.

But it is a factor.

I've mentioned this before, but it always surprises me that Amherstburg is not better known/more popular, especially to retirees. I don't know what supports the local economy, but it's quite a pretty town with lots of history. Not to mention a very nice climate!

It actually is getting popular with retirees now, especially in the last few years, same with Kingsville and much of Essex County. Still though, it seems much of Ontario is oblivious to the region and how nice it actually is. I feel that things are changing though, especially with the growth of the local wine region, almost 20 estate wineries here now.

I think the local economy relies on tourism, agriculture and manufacturing, plus a large segment commutes to Windsor for work.

Somehow I doubt though that you'd pick A'burg over Ottawa if A'burg was in the middle of nowhere as opposed to right next to Windsor and Detroit (not the prettiest town, but it has lots of stuff).

I'm not a typical retiree in any way, shape or form, other than that "no longer woring for a living" thing! And Ottawa offers a stellar quality of life, especially if, like me, you plan to spend extended periods of winter visiting the southern hemisphere.
