Hideous? I happen to like that angle! The Toronto Skyline is so nice it has no bad angles. That one makes it look like Concrete Jungle IMO & very big! (Like a small NYC).

The pin cushion effect from certain angles of Vancouver's skyline is ugly, yes. Toronto's got sort of the same thing going on with the new condos.

Erm...you think Shanghai has one of the most beautiful skylines in the world? Seriously?

It's one of the biggest out there, and it's got lots of sci-fi-esque stuff going on, and certain angles look impressive, but top ten beautiful and/or iconic?

That seems quite eccentric to me.

It's one of the biggest out there, and it's got lots of sci-fi-esque stuff going on, and certain angles look impressive, but top ten beautiful and/or iconic?

Absolutely iconic, especially considering how often it's used to represent China to the world. And personally, there are several angles that could easily be considered beautiful, such as the one below. The Shanghai Tower (628m)/World Financial Center (492m)/Jin Mao Building (421m) cluster is the tightest collection of supertalls in the world, and all of them are individually iconic and beautiful. Plus there's the extremely unique Oriental Pearl Tower (468m).

If you don't think this is iconic, I have to ask - what does a skyline need to be iconic?

The only Vancouver-calibre "pin cushion" I see is at the extreme lower end of the shot.

Instantly recognizable, indelibly representative of a place? There really are only about ten examples of iconic skylines in the world, and they're all obvious. But yeah, maybe Shanghai is getting there as a symbol of China's resent emergence.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree on the subjective call of its beauty though. I think it's interesting, and whacky, and clumsy-looking, but I'd never call it beautiful. At least not in a traditional sense, anyway.

I wouldn't call Shanghai's skyline beautiful, but I do think it's iconic looking.
