How many examples of scramble crosswalks are there in Metro Vancouver? I've heard of one in Steveston, but haven't seen any others.

The city was considering a few on Granville at Robson and Georgia Streets during the Olympics. Never came to anything though. I think they would be great in certain locations. City needs to get a bit more imaginative

This always comes up, but it gets shot down because it would confuse the blind and guide dogs.

http://www.vancouversun.com/health/Vancouver+puts+brakes+scramble+intersection/7863096/story.html

Richmond seems to have come up with some solutions and there are probably more out there. So I think Vancouver should look into it more rather than just assuming the solution for blind people at the moment is the best possible solution ever conceived.

Overall, I think scrambles could save a lot of lives while improving traffic flow at the same time. A lot of accidents occur when cars are making a turn and don't see a pedestrian crossing the road (doesn't really matter if you are blind or not).

Someone managed to drive up the Stanley Park causeway bikelane. This is really difficult with the new fence. —

Earlier in the week, a driver turning from Seymour to Dunsmuir stayed right of the median
- into the bike lane, saw oncoming bikes and swerved to avoid them
- and crashed into the A&W window.

Given there's only 2 lanes on the left of the median - I could see that happening.

What's with cars crashing into burger joints? First Fatburger on Denman, then there was another case in Surrey, I believe, and now this.

I think they believe it was a medical emergency and the car lost control, smashed through the fence, and was guided by the hill to just keep driving down the path a short distance.

So the new railing is not that safe at all if cars can easily plow through (we knew this). To be honest, I am not sure if those wires are even safe for cyclists when heading downhill with speed...

Looks like we need bigger, thicker cement walls for protected bike lanes. Maybe we can make car drivers pay, the way Trump will make Mexico pay to keep Mexicans out?

I thought the point of the fence was to keep cyclists from taking short lived unintentional joy rides in front of buses.

Yup, it's to prevent cyclists falling into traffic, not cars jumping the curb.

If cars jumping the curb were a big concern, they'd surround every bus stop with barriers, a lot of people seem to get hit by wayward cars while waiting at bus stops.

Bike Share Pricing

http://www.vancouvercondonews.com/blog/vancouver-bike-share-prices-rentals

Just a proposal at this stage:

Casual users: $5 sign up fee; $2.50 per 30 minute trip
Monthly plan: $20, includes unlimited 30 minute trips

Looks like decent value, not sure what longer trips will be on a monthly plan. However I like the simplicity so far.

Seems a bit pricier than most systems. Bixi in Montreal is $87/year, Citi Bike in NYC is $155/year and both have far larger networks than Vancouver's will be.

Helmets.

Plus I'd assume as the system expands you won't need to pay more...

The entire rail BCER rail spur from 20th St in New West to Nelson St in Burnaby has been ripped out. Burnaby has begun preparation work for the new cycling/pedestrian pathway.

Perhaps the most exciting news is that New Westminster is looking to build an overpass over Stewardson Way (and the railyards) to connect the western portion of the city to the waterfront. That's still being planned.

They've been talking about this for years, and to date I haven't seen anything concrete about this overpass. There's this article from 2014 that says pedestrians "could be using a new crossing on Stewardson Way sometime next year." Three years have passed and so far nothing.

I cycled the section today, and there was no damage visible. I could not tell how the car had made it where it is in the photo.

I had actually not ridden this section after widening and it is quite nice. I just wonder why they didn't pave the bikeway, but added a sliver of concrete on the side of the old concrete blocks. Seems like overly complicated way of widening the bikeway.

City of Vancouver wants to separate the bike route along 10th Ave in the hospital district.

Quote:
The city says it’s looking at several changes, foremost to do with the busy stretch of road around the 10th avenue Health Precinct and VGH, where cyclists are often competing for space with patients, ambulances, and visitors looking for parking.
http://www.cknw.com/2016/04/26/vancouver-mulls-changes-to-10th-ave-bikeway/

Hmm - they want to reduce the vehicle space to just one lane - wouldn't want to be in an ambulance on that street.

If I were VGH I'd be telling the city to go stuff itself.
