Erm, it'll be fully electric. From what we know of the project, it seems that it's essentially the same thing as GO RER but with a different technology. That allows the REM to be fully automated and to attain higher peak frequencies, but it limits the ease with which it can be expanded onto other railways (like to Laval or Montréal-Nord), unlike RER which runs on conventional rail.
But one way or another, this is tremendously exciting and not at all what I was expecting.
My future wishlist for the REM: a branch to Laval via the A15 to Carrefour Laval to relieve the overcrowded Ligne Orange and a branch to the woefully-underserviced Montréal-Nord via the existing CN railway.
