It is the Paramount Ranch in Agoura showing the set built for the movie "Wells Fargo" (1937) on the flatten hilltop on the right side (San Francisco) and a western set on the left side.

Just a single Julius Shulman image today. This is the First Federal Savings and Loan Association Building at Hollywood and Highland. It's "Job 2745: Austin, Field and Fry, First Federal Savings and Loan (Los Angeles, Calif.), 1959".

Martin Pal posted a large color postcard showing the other side of the building in post # 21615. I'm sure most people here know that this was the once the site of the Hollywood Hotel. From Martin Turnbull's website:

"In 1955, the southeast portion of the property was sold to First Federal Savings and Loan of Hollywood, and in August, 1956, the old Hollywood Hotel was razed and the 12-story First Federal building was erected on the northwest corner of Hollywood Blvd. and Highland where it stood until 1998. It was razed to make way for the Hollywood and Highland shopping center."

Here's a current view looking in roughly the same direction as the Shulman image.

I like that IMDB lists movie locations, but I don't find it particularly useful in most cases. Often, there's no address or specificity, like with Angel's Camp, nor do we know what scenes of the film in question were filmed at said location.

First of all, I didn't know there was a statue of Florence Nightingale in Lincoln Heights.

It turns out, she's located in Lincoln Park, on the southeast side of the lake (circled below)

Angels Camp is a town in Calaveras County I know of from two directions (so to speak): It's where Mark Twain first heard the tale about the jumping frog, and it's the site where a certain foundling Old Rose ("Angels Camp Tea") was originally found (moderately well known among the Old Rose enthusiasts). Parrotts Ferry is a site near Angels Camp and nearer Vallecito.

David Edstrom, her world-famous sculptor and LA resident, interviewed by the LAT as he was putting the final touches on the statue, said "The Nightingale statue is one of my best works. Eight feet of cast stone, yet it looks light, like her gentle spirit." (3-28-1937).

In the mid 1960’s I was dating a girl who's father was ineligible for active duty during WWII but served in the California National Guard. Some of his time was with the 1st Evacuation Unit, which he referred to as the “Station Wagon Corps.” Life magazine covered the unit under the title "The Station Wagon Brigade." See the life magazine photo link on the website below.

My girlfriend's father took these photos. They start on the south side of Cahuenga Pass as the overhead wires for the Pacific Electric San Fernando Valley line can be seen in the center median. The "convoy” then appears though it might be continuing along Ventura Boulevard, ultimately winding up at what looks to be a movie ranch.

I have not been able to find a lot of information on this unit but this web page provides a brief summary.

Yep. Just south of the LAC+USC site. That's the old County psychiatric hospital in the background to the right, pediatric building on the far left (both condemned and razed after the Whittier earthquake). State street runs between them, but isn't visible. Picture is taken from the corner of Kingston and Pomeroy, looking north-ish, with I-10 behind the photographer. 1025 Kingston is still there, according to Google Street View

e_r, check out the little building across the street from your empty lot. It has some similarities with the old Cubbison's Health Food Store photo. It seems somewhat shallow, it backs up to a hillside, and the window pattern could possibly match. I know it's behind trees on the current street view but check out 2007:

Looking at more modern street views it's clear that there is a LOT of fill in the windows, and although the resolution is junk on the old street view, you can tell from newer ones that the window closest to the front used to be much taller, like the old photo. I'm betting the other two windows on that side also have some amount of fill.

Inconclusive, but I'd say it's at least possible that this is your building from the old photo.

Cubbison's appears in the CDs from the mid-20s, usually at 3417 Pasadena Avenue. A couple of directories in the early-30s list the business as the Cubbison Cracker Co Inc (crackers) at 6814 McKinley Avenue. The building in e_r's later picture wouldn't look out-of-place at this address, but I can't see it in GSV. By 1942 the name changes to the Cubbison Toast and Cracker Co, Melba and Soya Toast-Zwieback-Crackers at 3401-19 Pasadena Avenue. I didn't search every CD, but in 1956, the entry for 3419 Pasadena Avenue says Cubbison Cracker Co see Rold Gold of Calif Inc (which is also listed at the same address).

Returning to the building that ProphetM posted above, it was built in 1923 by H G Cubbison as stores and apartments.

After yesterday's brief Julius Shulman post, I had to decide which ones of this set to leave out. The full set contains 14 images, but I think this selection gives a fair representation. This is "Job 2155: Gemological Institute of America (Los Angeles, Calif.), 1956".



I think that this is the view from the side.



Here's the courtyard...

These stairs are just inside the entrance.



I assume that this is a display of gems.

Unusually, the job title doesn't mention the architect, but the description says that this is a Richard Neutra design located at 11940 San Vicente Boulevard. That's just a stone's throw from the Brentwood Savings/Comerica Bank building we saw in post #34541. Here's the building permit.

I can't see a demo permit, but the current building looks nothing like the one in the Shulman photos. However, from overhead, I did wonder whether this is the staircase from the pictures above.
