Man, those drone shots are sooooo sick, Hunter! Am I counting this right that we only have 5 floors left on 801 Grand?

Noticed a lot of aggressive panhandling at Broadway and 4th the last few days. Same guys and one guy is constantly walking in traffic really harassing drivers. Gonna go talk to the BID guys about it when I get a second bc he might get run over and it's annoying.

Also seems like 3 new shops are about ready to open in Spring St Arcade. Snapped some clips a couple days ago but haven't had time to upload them

Looking at the Metropolis webcam this morning, they are absolutely flying on the 3rd tower (the 40-story one), now three floors above the higher height floors. Based on the most recent renders, we have 6 or 7 more floors before the tower rises above the base that extends to the south along Francisco Street.

And you can now make out formwork in the tallest tower in LA Central/Oceanwide from the cam as well. Things are starting to pick up steam!

LA times posted a video from with great footage atop the Wilshire Grand:

Curb posted about it, and took a few screen grabs:

Your comment made me curious about Broadway and 4th, so I checked it out.

What's going on, or more to the point, what's not going with the building on the northeast corner?

It has scaffolding, but nothing appears to have happened in over 8 years!

Here it is in 2007.

gsv

And here it is most recently, in 2015.

gsv

Does anyone know the status of this building?

There was a fire several years ago. The owners of the property definitely want to sell it (they've made up renders of what it could look like, although they were pretty terrible as I recall) but I don't think they've gotten an offer they like. That last part is speculation, but given the fact that it's sat vacant for years and years now, I think it's safe to assume.

It's more than an eyesore... it is dangerous. I wouldn't be surprised if it partially collapsed at any moment, injuring people on the sidewalk. Even if just the scaffolding/construction barriers fell that would be an issue. I've said it before but in any other coastal city they would be slapping that building with at least $1k a day in fines until that shit was cleared up. Period.

On a more positive note, that building has been home to a number of avante garde art installations, such as weird mannequins in the burned out windows, weird black flowers other weird decorations etc

Yeah, there have been some cool installations there. Most recently a giant tentacle coming out of a second floor window. Still, this thing needs to be torn down.

I wonder if we will ever see these rail lines/yards buried. Might cost a billion, but seems pointless to revitalize the river and give us a new beautiful 6th street viaduct if that section of the river is/will still be lined with heavy rail on both sides.

One thing we are lacking in this city, and downtown especially, is green space. What better way (other than the freeway caps) to provide that than to bury the rail lines and have green space on both sides of the river. The viaduct/river revitalization alone will spur development over there, burying the rails and adding all of that green space would do even more........
Unless that's already part of the river revitalization plan.

^ I can't speak for the rail lines, but I do remember reading somewhere that Edison's long term plans include burying the transmission lines underground.

that property is a disgrace. It's one of the reasons there have been 2 articles over the past few months on dtla that have included references to the way there's still no shortage of dilapidation....that writer exaggerated & said it was on every corner....or the comments of a tourist from DC interviewed about the hood who said that with all the talk about the new, revived dt, there remains signs of its tired old past.

I hope the apt tower across the street will break ground asap, if only to take attention away from the burned out mess on the other side of 4th st.

Lots of ppl who are visiting grand central mkt....as I did in february....are likely to bump into the areas around 4th & broadway, & most definitely, the corner of 4th & hill st. I'm still waiting for the corner of 4th & hill to be cleared out....for the tear down of the taco house.....to make way for another new apt tower.

ASAP, please, so tourists like the one with this interesting irish accent aren't going a bit overboard by saying.....

Travel TV: Why Downtown Los Angeles is America's hottest 'hood

The key to Los Angeles lies in its neighbourhoods, says our Travel Editor. And DTLA is one of the hottest in America.

2016 is a big year for Irish travel to LA.

Ethiopian Airlines is flying direct from Dublin, Aer Lingus resumes its direct service in May, and WOW Air is offering one-stop fares via Iceland.

There are lots of reasons to visit - from iconic draws like Venice Beach and the Walk of Fame to Universal Hollywood's new Wizarding World of Harry Potter. But a neighbourhood focus is required to get the best out of this sprawling city, and the first neighbourhood you hit should be Downtown.

Gritty and gentrified, full of soaring skyscrapers and Skid Row warehouses, a hot restaurant district and home to the swanky Walt Disney Concert Hall, DTLA is having a moment, and this is an intriguing time to visit.

Sapphire doesn't look half bad. With the right materials (as noted in Blackcat's site), it could end up looking really nice, actually.

As for Emerald, I'm not big on the color scheme, but if that also uses metal panels instead of stucco for the exterior elements, it could end up being decent as well. If the brown areas are wood, it will look even better. I just wish they integrated some of the wood on the Olive Street side, but there's plenty of time for revisions. Hopefully not in the value engineering direction...
