They weren't trying to repurpose it so much as they were trying to achieve the initial vision. Thunderbird House was built as the first building of what was supposed to be a multi-building complex.

It was part of a misguided effort to "clean up" the North Main strip before the 1999 Pan Am Games, mainly by demolishing a substantial part of it. To be frank, this 1960s style urban renewal flat out sucked in terms of what it did. It did nothing to improve the area but still soaked up a bunch of money. So I'm surprised when anyone who has been paying attention to what has happened there in the last couple of decades would want more of that kind of "renewal" in the North Main area.

Here's the study currently being undertaken by the City. Maybe have 1 at the G location and one on Waterfront. Serves both areas well and is on existing greenspace. Boom, done. I'm sure if someone in the area of E has a dog, they're already utilizing teat space as a dog toilet.

Open house board say they are looking at site size of 0.15-0.50 hectares. A hockey rink is 0.15 hectares. So around 1 to 3 hockey rinks is the land size required for an urban neighbourhood dog park. That is what the City is striving for here.

Sounds pretty large, saw many dog parks in numerous European cities and most were smaller than the size of hockey rink with many being about half that size. You choose to live in a downtown neighborhood and keep a dog, maybe you should have thought about that first or have chosen a cat over the dog, just saying. Don't know where it's a right for the city to provide a dog park in the first place when downtown barely has enough parks for human inhabitants!

Although I agree that there are many people with an inflated sense if entitlement, I do not see the issue with having a park of that size in the proposed areas.

The city is looking to turn unused space into an area for residents and their dogs to congregate. All of the proposed sites along Waterfront would sit as grass, so why not create something that people actually want to go to? I can count the number of times I have seen more than 5 people in Stephen Juba park on one hand. And usually these people are walking their dogs.

^ Juba Park is a very busy place mid-day, with nearby workers gravitating there for lunch, to stroll, for yoga, etc.

But anyway, I'm with rrskylar. The City shouldn't bother trying to accommodate the rare downtown dwellers with Dobermans or whatever other large breeds. Build small dog runs in existing parks aimed at the small breeds that are most common downtown. It's a cheap solution, and the best parts are that it doesn't require new park space while also making better use of existing parks.

Dog run in Bonnycastle Park, dog run in Juba Park, dog run in Central Park. Boom, done, next.

Personally I'm not upset about it, but if the city decided to build three smaller dog runs instead they could have already been in existence.

If hey do decide on a dog park, hopefully they have enough sense to put it behind a double-gated fence like every other dog park in the world outside of Winnipeg. Even Brandon's parks were designed this way, but for some reason Winnipeg doesn't get it.

People who are frightened of off-leash dogs should have some hope of avoiding them. And it shouldn't be so easy for dogs to take off and run into traffic either. Once on my bike I happened to be riding behind a dog that took off from his owner, ran straight down to Midland and eventually got hit by a car on Dublin. Not to mention getting bit by an aggressive dog in the same area another time when I was just passing through.

It is central to the residential populations in the Exchange, would not be taking away existing green space from other uses and would be more the suitable sized based on the information from the open house. It would also add a nice patch of green in an area that otherwise doesn't have a lot of green spaces.

Toronto and Chicago both have surprisingly large urban dog populations, and a pretty fun dog culture to go with it. Dogs come into stores, shops leave out water and treats for them and so on. But like you say about European cities, where they do have dog parks, they're tiny pocket parks--really just enough space to let a dog off leash to shit and hump other dogs.

For the record, I voted for spot 'G' on the survey. I have absolutely no problem with dogs running around a pooping under the midtown bridge. In fact, I'd say that's an ideal use for that land, since nobody seems to want a shanty town there.
