It's a multi-million dollar negative asset so maybe the City should give it back to them and tell them they will take it back from them for free if they drop the ridiculous public use requirement.

Who cares if it's a park. As long as it doesn't cost the city another fortune. I rather see a park then another city building half empty just so some officials can stretch their legs in their office.

Plus that area doesn't have a park anywhere close. And don't say central or juba is close. No one wants to walk 6-8 blocks to sit in a park. Also don't say the little postage stamp Markets Square park either. That place isn't what I call a park.

And second which you seem to miss all the time as you want a concrete jungle for some reason is people living downtown need green space. That area has zero right now and we could make a interesting asain themed one to fit the areas cultural feel.

Just don't forget there was a awesome farmers market there at one time. That could be an option also. We also have a boatload of RRC students that I bet would love a park to relax in.

I guess I am just a little more biased for the need for green space that's functional for each area the most being an Arborist and having studied this in university in great detail.

careful. you will get the green list thrown at you. maybe with a few boulevards thrown in

even Regina does a better job with central greenspace than Winnipeg.

That's a good point. Downtown was full of green centre medians and the boulevards used to be all green also. So if anything we have lost more green space in the last 30 years then gained. Now it's concrete everywhere.
Regina respects trees and green space as they had nothing before. Here it's the pave everything over mentality and cry later.

Not everyone wants to hang out at the forks or sit beside the river getting eaten by skeeters in the summer. Maybe they just want a nice little park close to home they can take the family or to relax. Walk the dog. Who knows.

Who in this city does not already have a "nice little park" a short walk from where they live?

I know you didn't ask me, but what happened to the idea of putting it close to Esplanade Riel? By the river would make sense to me, at least it could be reasonably sized.

I wonder why we don't have any compact dog runs yet? Not many of the dogs I see downtown are big... there are lots of smaller breeds that would benefit from things like this. 2 or 3 of these would be easy to accommodate:

Is the downtown dog park supposed to be to exercise your dogs. Or just a place for them to do their business? Or both. If the dog movement wants a suburban style dog park downtown, I think they'll be waiting for many years to come.

Yeah, I can't imagine there will be a massive Kil-Cona Park style dog park anywhere soon... there just isn't the space for it. Although come to think of it that might be one way to find a productive use for the land if rail relocation happens with the CP yards.

That said, if all we're talking about is some modest dog runs, then how on earth has that NOT happened yet? There is plenty of room at McFadyen Park, Central Park, Juba Park, etc. to plunk one of those down in.

So then, what we're really talking about is not quantity but quality. There are plenty of parks... if no one is using them because they're too lame with little thought given to design and amenities, then how does adding more parks help? Why not improve the ones we already have?

I was wondering about that one... is that actually a city-owned park or is it just a patch of vacant land still owned by CP?

You'll know downtown revitalization is really on a roll when something finally happens on that site.
